Working notes from the research, kept verbatim — what was read, what it proved, what stays open. Many open with a line grading the parentage; what the grades mean.

Research note · 27 Oct 2026
AUDITED 27 Oct 2026 - her first. NAME DEMOTED AND BIRTHPLACE WITHDRAWN; her parents are NOT graded (there is no parent family to grade). Register K1423-K1428. WHO SHE WAS, ON THE RECORDS: the wife of Hampton Morgan [3134] is named MARY, and only Mary, in three censuses read 27 Oct 2026. 1850, Spartanburg Dist., S.C., dwelling 2908 (K1423, read on the image): 'H. Morgan 30, Mary 31', with Bery 9, Jeffers 5, Ann 3, Thomas 1, Rebecca 5, Sally 5. 1860, Laurens Dist., S.C., p. 251, dwelling 2020 (K1424, read on the image): head 'Hamilton Morgan 53', 'Mary 40', with W B 19, I J 16, R A 14, J T 12, M A 7. 1870, Travis Co., Tex. (K1425, INDEX ONLY): Hampton 54, Mary 50. The children carry from 1850 to 1860 (Bery 9 / W B 19, Jeffers 5 / I J 16, Thomas 1 / J T 12), so it is one household. Her ages give birth about 1819-20 in South Carolina. In 1880 Hampton's wife is 'Eve', 63 (K212) - a second wife or the same woman; not decided. WHY 'DUNKIN' IS DEMOTED: no record found carries it. Not the censuses; not FamilySearch full-text (K1427: 'Hampton Morgan', 1,168 documents, and 'Mary Ann Dunkin', 88, both complete sets - no document puts the two names together); not the death certificates of two sons, [295] in 1932 and [3138] in 1938 (K1426), which both answer 'don't know' for the mother. The FamilySearch tree profile 'Mary Ann Dunkin, 2 Jul 1820-1870' cites only the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses, none of which names her surname (K1428). 'Dunkin' is kept as an alternate name marked tree-derived. Same treatment as [847] 'Burford'. WHY 'EDGEFIELD' IS WITHDRAWN: every pre-1861 record of this family is in Spartanburg (1842 court, 1850 census, 1853-57 estate accounts) or Laurens (1860). An Edgefield Morgan family of 1870 with its own Isaac and Hampton is a different family (K1427). Birthplace is now 'South Carolina', from the censuses. Her death year 1870 is UNSOURCED: she is alive in the 1870 census. THE WALL: South Carolina issued no marriage licences before 1911. Her surname can only come from her father's will or equity papers naming 'Mary, wife of Hampton Morgan', or from a child's record. Next: Spartanburg and Laurens will and equity books 1835-1870.
