1850 U.S. Federal Census, Brant, Erie Co., New York; NARA M432 roll 499, page 334b, dwelling 787, family 829, line 4; enumerated 21 Aug 1850. Household as enumerated: George West 81, farmer, b. MASSACHUSETTS; Tryphena West 80; Stephen West 57; Elvira West 50; Edwin West 19; Paulina West 17; Mariett West 14; Marshal J West 11; Augusta West 9. George's birthplace column is the decisive datum: age 81 => b. c.1769, MASSACHUSETTS, matching the tree. CAVEAT RECORDED, NOT SMOOTHED: his father Francis lived at Hopkinton, RHODE ISLAND, and there is also a Hopkinton, MASSACHUSETTS — an 81-year-old or his informant collapsing the two is exactly the expected error, so this corroborates rather than proves. George (dw. 787) and Matthew (dw. 771) sit sixteen dwellings apart on one enumerator's route: the strongest proximity the 1850 census can give, and NOT proof of the father-son link, because 1850 records no relationships at all.

Research notes

Working notes from the research, kept verbatim — what was read, what it proved, what stays open. Many open with a line grading the parentage; what the grades mean.

Research note · 27 Jul 2026
Audited 27 Jul 2026 - NO PROBATE EXISTS. The Erie Co. General Index to Surrogate's Records runs Asa West (23 May 1849) -> Mathew West (29 Jul 1852, case 24174) -> Reuben Westcott (20 Jan 1866) with nothing between, so George West, who died 16 Jun 1853, never had an estate proceeding opened. His MASSACHUSETTS birthplace and age 81 are confirmed by the 1850 census - though note his father Francis lived at Hopkinton, RHODE ISLAND, and there is also a Hopkinton, Massachusetts. Consequence: George->Matthew can never be proven from George's own estate. Erie Co. General Index to Surrogate's Records, Index to Estates W-Z 1800-1929, image 129. 1850 U.S. Census, Brant, Erie Co., New York; NARA M432 roll 499, p. 333a dwelling 771 (Matthew) and p. 334b dwelling 787 (George).
