Both dates were UNCITED and neither can be checked against a source. The birth is the better supported of the two by sibling spacing (his siblings in F748 are born 1820, 1826, 1830, 1835 and 1838, so a birth in 1840 as the youngest is coherent), so the birth has been left untouched and the DEATH DATE HAS BEEN BLANKED rather than corrected. The recorded value is preserved verbatim here: "5 Oct 1839". The day and month may well be right and only the year wrong, but nothing in hand says which year, and a plausible guess written into a date field is indistinguishable from evidence a year from now. Restore it from a source, not from this note.
