Research note · 3 Nov 2026
AUDITED 3 Nov 2026 - CHRISTINA (Christenah, Christianna) SPEARS, wife of George Spears of Rockingham County, Virginia. Named 'my beloved wife Christenah' and executrix in his will of 14 Oct 1796, proved November 1803 (K1620). DEAD BY 5 MAY 1818, when 'the legal heirs of the aforsaid Christianna & George Spears Deceased' released to her granddaughter 'Elizabeth Spears now Elizabeth Holliday' a 'negro Girl by the name of Fanny' whom Christina had given her in her lifetime (K1619). MOTHER of [3542] Elizabeth by argument (an heir of hers; see Elizabeth's note); as mother of [734] Catherine, not graded. HER MAIDEN NAME IS NOT ESTABLISHED: the Carpenter Family Papers (via the Kentucky Historical Society) say Hardwin and a Bright family history says Timmerman; neither cites a record, so the surname is left blank.
HER PARENTS: A WALL (3 Nov 2026, K1622, K1624, K1625). She was George's wife by 3 Feb 1760, when 'George Speece and Christina' sold 150 acres on Linville's Creek (Augusta County deed, in Chalkley's abstracts, K1622); that deed gives her first name only. No record found names her father. A third surname, Neely, appears on DAR lineage forms, very probably borrowed from her son Jacob's wife Elisabeth Neely (K1624). What would reopen it: the Carpenter Family Papers (Kentucky Historical Society, MSS 47, Box 1, Folder 1), or an Augusta or Frederick County deed or will naming her father.
