Research note · 4 Nov 2026
AUDITED 4 Nov 2026 - MARY NEES of Hopewell Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; died between 1 and 28 Jun 1850. HER WILL, dated 30 May 1850 and proved 28 Jun 1850 (K1640, read on the image), names 'my daughter Elizabeth Kunkle', 'my daughter Sarah Deppin', and her sons William, Joseph and James Nees, and makes 'my friend Rudolph Kunkle of Hopewell Township' sole executor. She signed by her mark. In the 1850 census of Hopewell Township, taken as of 1 Jun 1850, 'Mary Neiss', 72, born Pennsylvania, is in Rudolph and Elisabeth Kunkle's household (K1641), so she was born about 1778. Rudolph Gunkel accounted as her executor on 17 Dec 1850 (K1642, machine transcript only). HUSBAND: the will mentions 'my deceased husband' but does not name him. The same day Rudolph accounted as administrator of a James Nees deceased (K1642); whether that is her husband or the son James named living in May 1850 is not settled, so no husband is entered. Mother of [3413] Elizabeth, by her will (see Elizabeth's note). No birth or death event is entered; the dates above rest on the will and the census.
