Working notes from the research, kept verbatim — what was read, what it proved, what stays open. Many open with a line grading the parentage; what the grades mean.
Research note · 30 Sep 2026
AUDITED 30 Sep 2026 - MARY ALLEN'S PARENTS ARE UNKNOWN. A mother named 'Joanna Newell' (born 2 Sep 1707 at Canaveal, Santa Marinha, Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal) came in with an early import and was REMOVED from this tree 30 Sep 2026 (round-8 triage, ruling A5, Owen). Nothing stood behind her: no citation in this database by any route; on the published Ancestry tree her only 'source' was 'Ancestry Family Trees', a copy of another member's tree; the compiled Latané accounts that give Mary Allen as John Latané's wife name no parent of hers (agent-report-551-joanna-newell-2026-09-30.md); and WikiTree's profile of John Latané (Latané-33, read 30 Sep 2026) gives her only as 'Mary Allen', with no parents.
DO NOT RE-ADD JOANNA NEWELL from a hint or a member tree, and do not accept hints naming 'Guilherme (William) Newell' or 'Mary Joan DE Bus (Van Boos) Tyson'. Her own 1765/1767 death question (read 10 Aug 2026) is separate and still open.
1 Oct 2026 (round-9 triage, Owen) - A FATHER CANDIDATE, NOT ENTERED: John Allen the Elder of Essex Co., Va., d. 1750 intestate. Per the 1 Oct 2026 agent report (agent-report-58-mary-allen-2026-10-01.md): his administration bond is Essex Will Book 8 pp. 369-370, with John Latane among the sureties; the division of his personal estate, ordered 20 Mar 1751 and returned 16 Jul 1751, is Will Book 9 pp. 70-71; and Mary Latane is a complainant in an Essex chancery decree of 21 May 1765. Held until Will Book 9 pp. 70-71 is read on the image - an intestate division names the heirs. His widow Elizabeth (Reeves) Allen, testator of 1774 (Will Book 12 pp. 602-604), may have been Mary's stepmother; no stepmother is entered.
DATES: the 1763 marriage date (South Farnham Parish) was uncited and falls 13 years after her son [55] William's birth on 17 Jun 1750; it was blanked 1 Oct 2026 and no estimate entered. Her death stays 1767, uncited. The 1765 reading from the Parson Latane notebook is a conflict, recorded and not adopted: her absence from Essex records after May 1765 is not a death.
