Stories They Tell

  1. Homegrown

The old farmer had a look in his eye
Like he knew something I didn’t know
I was rushing around trying to get out of town
To somewhere I needed to go
He said, “You look like you’re running hard
I’ve been there before”
I said, “I ain’t getting any younger
And I barely got my foot in the door”
He said, “Ain’t how fast you run
You got to know which way to go
To make something last
Sometimes you’ve got to take it slow”

He said
Take time, age like wine
Creep along like a grapevine, on and on
If you want fruit
You need strong roots
There’s no substitute
Make your own
Homegrown

He said, “If you’re hardheaded like I used to be
You’re gonna do it your own way
It’s up to you, but all you can do
Is grow a little every day”
I’d been chasing my tail around
Shooting out of range
Acting like a clown
Something’s gotta change

I’m gonna
Take time, age like wine
Creep along like a grapevine, on and on
If you want fruit
You need strong roots
There’s no substitute
Make your own
Homegrown

Take time, age like wine
Creep along like a grapevine, on and on
If you want fruit
You need strong roots
There’s no substitute
Make your own
Homegrown
Homegrown
