Research note · 13 Oct 2026
AUDITED 13 Oct 2026 - PARENTS NOT YET GRADED. Candidate parents: Augustus Lumpkin (b. abt 1825 Ga.) and his wife Elizabeth (b. La.), of Gainesville, Hancock Co., Miss. No parent is entered. HER OWN RECORDS. Hancock Co., Miss. marriage bond, licence and return, p. 91, read on the image: bond 28 Nov 1885, Wiley Green Jarrell with Asa Jarrell as surety; Wiley swore that he and "Cassie M. Lumpkins" had both reached lawful age, so no parent's consent was needed and none is named; married 1 Dec 1885 by W. K. Varnado. 1900 U.S. census, Beat 3, Lacey Precinct, Hancock Co., ED 25, sheet 4A, dwelling 46, read on the image: Cassie, wife, born June 1863, age 37, married 15 years, mother of 6 children, all 6 living, born Mississippi. Her son James Franklin Jarrell's 1972 Texas death certificate gives his mother as "Cassie Lumpkins", born Carriere, Miss. THE HOUSEHOLD SHE GREW UP IN. 1880 U.S. census, Gainesville, Hancock Co., Miss., ED 147, sheet 282A, dwelling 5, read on the image: Augustus Lumpkin (written "Lumkin" by the enumerator) 55, farmer, born Georgia; Elizabeth, wife, born Louisiana; Margaret, daughter, 16, born Mississippi; William 22; Gideon 18; Harriet 12; Harry 10; Missouri 7. Two doors away, at dwelling 7, are Sylvester Jarrell, 24, and his wife Francis. WHY THE 1880 MARGARET IS TAKEN TO BE CASSIE. She signed as "Cassie M." in the 1885 marriage bond, and her grave marker is indexed as "Cassie Margaret". The 1880 census age fits a June 1863 birth. She married in the same county five years later. Sylvester and Frances Jarrell, her neighbours in the 1880 census, were living next door to her and Wiley in the 1900 census. No other girl named Cassie of her age is indexed in the 1880 census of Hancock County. WHY THIS IS NOT YET GRADED. The only record placing her in Augustus's family is the 1880 census, and a census household shows who lived together, not who was whose child. CONFLICT: the 1880 census gives her father's birthplace as Georgia and her mother's as Louisiana; the 1900 census gives both as Mississippi. The informant for neither is known, and this is unresolved. CAUTION. Online trees call him Henry Augustus "Gus" Lumpkin (d. 1900) and give his wife as Elizabeth "Betsy" Holden (1827-1917). No record read so far gives either the name Henry or the surname Holden; do not add them on that basis. WHAT WOULD DECIDE IT. Augustus left no will in the Pearl River County will book. His estate administration about 1900, in the Hancock or Pearl River chancery records, or a deed dividing the family land after Elizabeth's death, would list his heirs. Cassie died in July 1901, so a settlement after that date would name her children as heirs of a deceased daughter. Registers K1022-K1026.
