Crozier, Spotsylvania County Records 1721-1800 (1905; archive.org virginiacountyre01croz, read 3 Aug 2026), Deed Book D: "June 9, 1743. Humphrey Hill of King and Queen Co. and Frances, his wife, to William Lynn of Fredericksburg, Doctor of Physic. £310 curr. Lot No. 22 in town of Fredksbg. John Champe, George Morton, Wm. Hughes, John Taliaferro." Supports: a Frances married to Humphrey Hill of King and Queen Co. by 9 Jun 1743, joining to convey (dower). It does NOT state her maiden name or her father — the Baylor identification is a separate, still-unproven question (baylor-existence-test-worksheet-2026-08-03.md).

Research notes

Working notes from the research, kept verbatim — what was read, what it proved, what stays open. Many open with a line grading the parentage; what the grades mean.

Research note · 3 Aug 2026
AUDITED 3 Aug 2026 — DEATH '10 APR 1802' DELETED; IT BELONGS TO HER DAUGHTER-IN-LAW. Courtney, The Hill Family of Virginia (1905), Section 2 Continued, read at source (djvu lines 163-170, personally re-verified 3 Aug 2026): 'Edward Hill, eldest son of Col. Humphrey Hill and Frances Baylor… born in 1746. His wife, Fannie Baylor Hill, died April 10th, 1802, aged 54 years (she was born in 1748.)' — the 1802 death is Edward's wife's (his 'mother's niece'), a generation down. Courtney gives THIS Frances no dates at all; her death is now deliberately EMPTY. Her MATERNITY is disputed and unresolved: VMHB 25 (1917) pp. 319-321 assigns her to Col. Robert Baylor's FIRST wife Frances (from the Spotsylvania deeds), while Courtney/Bagby name Hannah Gregory; a Spotsylvania dower acknowledgement of 4 Apr 1730 names 'Agnes, wife of Richd. Gregory', further complicating the Gregory reading. Evidence file: baylor-rereads-2026-08-03.md.
