Research note · 28 Sep 2026
CREATED 27 Sep 2026 as the MOTHER of [508] Anna Patterson (Lyons) Derrick, on Owen's grade of that date (ARGUMENT). Register K848. Her own family added 28 Sep 2026 on Owen's instruction (K852-K855). At St. John's Church, Washington, on 14 Nov 1832, she stood sponsor with their mother for three children of William S. and Ann Derrick, entered as "Grandmother, Margaret Lyons". Their father's mother was Sarah Sharpless, so she is the maternal grandmother (argument in [508]'s note). HER SISTERS, AND A WIDOW BY 1852. Two powers of attorney recorded in the Ross County, Ohio deed records on 18 Jun 1852, read on the image (K852): on 26 Jan 1852 "Margaret Lyon and Elizabeth Braiden both of the City and County of Washington in the District of Columbia sisters and heirs at law of Catharine Stewart of Ross County and State of Ohio, now deceased but late the wife of A. Stewart" appointed Mary Saunders of Cincinnati to settle Catharine's estate; and on 29 Mar 1852 "the said Margaret Lyons (a widow) and the said Elizabeth Braiden" empowered her to sell their interest in 100 acres in Ross County that Adam Steward had conveyed to Catharine Baldwin in 1843. Elizabeth Braiden, unmarried, died in Washington about 1856, and Margaret Lyons was her administratrix (Evening Star, Feb 1857 and Aug 1864; K853). WHY THIS IS THE SAME WOMAN. In 1850 a Margaret Lyons, 65, born Pennsylvania, lived in Washington Ward 1 in the household of Alexander H. and Emma Derrick (census index, K854). Emma is the Emma (Lyons) Derrick with whom a Margaret Lyons of Washington signs the Champaign Co., Illinois land papers of 1861 and 1865 (K849). She is the only Margaret Lyons indexed in Washington in 1850, and her age fits the mother of Anna (b. 1807) and grandmother of the 1832 children. The chain is ARGUMENT: no single record names her in all these roles. NOT PROVED. Her maiden name - probably Braiden, since the 1852 papers make her Elizabeth Braiden's sister, but they state the sisterhood, not whose daughters they were. Her husband's given name - NOT KNOWN; she was a widow by January 1852, and the John Lyons of Washington Ward 1 in the 1830 census does not fit her household (K855). 'Patterson' is suggested only by her daughter's middle name and is not evidence. The birth about 1785 in Pennsylvania is from the 1850 index only and is not entered as an event.
