PROOF CLASS: FATHER = DIRECT (Owen, 27 Oct 2026) - Martin Hawksworth of Markinfield Hall: his widow's 1843 will names 'my Daughter Mary Hawksworth now Mary Pattison' and 'my late husband Martin Hawksworth'. Register K1412, K201. PROOF CLASS: MOTHER = DIRECT (Owen, 27 Oct 2026) - Grace Hawksworth of Swinnow Hall, widow: her own 1843 will (proved 1846) names 'my Daughter Mary Hawksworth now Mary Pattison'. Register K1412, K201. AUDITED 27 Oct 2026 - HER FIRST. PARENTS ENTERED: Martin Hawksworth of Markinfield Hall, gentleman (died before May 1843), and his wife Grace, later of Swinnow Hall near Wetherby (will 1843, proved 1846). Her maiden name, HAWKSWORTH, is entered on the same record. THE QUESTION. Who were the parents of [938] Mary, wife of [937] William Pattison, born about 1795 at Markingfield, Yorkshire, whose children were baptised in the Catholic chapel at Stockeld Park, Spofforth, 1820-1835? THE EVIDENCE. (1) The registered will of Grace Hawksworth of Swinnow Hall, widow, dated 13 May 1843 and proved 16 April 1846 (York Prerogative and Exchequer Court, Prob. Reg. 213b; K1412, read on the image in full): 'my late husband Martin Hawksworth late of Markinfield Hall in the said County Gentleman deceased'; 'my Daughter Mary Hawksworth now Mary Pattison late the Wife and Widow of William Pattison late of Swinnow Hall aforesaid deceased'; Mary is made sole executrix and residuary legatee; witnesses 'Jno. Clayton Solr. Wetherby' and his clerk. (2) The 1851 census of Kirk Deighton (HO107/2283 f.589 p.20; K201, image): 'Mary Pattison, Head, Widow, 56', born Markingfield, with son John (born Linton) and daughter Martha, 16, born 'Swinnow, Wetherby'. (3) Martha's Catholic baptism at Stockeld Park, 19 Jan 1835 (RG 4/3698; K526, image): parents 'Wm & Mary Pattison'. THE CORRELATION. The will is the record that states the relationship: Grace names Mary as her daughter and Martin as her late husband. That this Mary Pattison is ours rests on four agreements: she was born at Markingfield (1851) and her father was 'late of Markinfield Hall'; she was a widow by 1851 and the will calls her the widow of William Pattison by May 1843; her daughter was born at Swinnow, and her husband was 'late of Swinnow Hall'; and the will was drawn by a Wetherby solicitor, the market town for Swinnow, Spofforth and Kirk Deighton. Her husband's burial at Spofforth on 21 Jul 1841, aged 56, abode 'Swinnow' (K982), fits the will's 'late of Swinnow Hall ... deceased'. THE CONFLICTS. None found. The Ancestry index lists William Pattison in this will as 'daughter-in-law'; the image says he was the late husband of Grace's daughter. A Helen Hawksworth married Matthew Pattison at Spofforth in 1819 (K979), and a 'Helen Pattison' was Martha's godmother in 1835 (K526); she may be Mary's sister, but the will does not name her and she is not entered. THE CONCLUSION. Father: DIRECT, Martin Hawksworth of Markinfield Hall. Mother: DIRECT, his wife Grace Hawksworth (maiden name unknown). What would overturn it: a second Mary Pattison, widow of a William Pattison of Swinnow, distinct from ours - none is known. What would add to it: Martin Hawksworth's own will (Markingfield lies in the Ripon peculiar, not the York registers), which may name her as Mary Pattison.
