Research notes
Working notes from the research, kept verbatim — what was read, what it proved, what stays open. Many open with a line grading the parentage; what the grades mean.
Research note · 16 Aug 2026
PROOF CLASS: BOTH PARENTS = DIRECT - the Stockeld Park Chapel register (TNA RG 4/3698), read on the image, enters Martha 19 Jan 1835 as "dau of Wm & Mary Pattison"; the 1851 census, which HAS a relationship column, states it again.
AUDITED 16 Aug 2026 - BOTH PARENTS PROVEN on the Stockeld Park Chapel (Catholic) register, TNA RG 4/3698, read on the image: Martha Pattison, born & bapt 19 Jan 1835, dau of WM & MARY PATTISON. The mother's MAIDEN surname is NOT recorded - Mary stays surname-unknown.
THE REGISTER - TNA RG 4/3698 (Spofforth: Stockeld Park Chapel, Roman Catholic, baptisms 1785-1840), via Ancestry's England & Wales Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers - the same collection this tree already cites on her baptism. The first entry under the 1835 heading reads: "19 | 19 | Martha Pattison, By Rev. F. Brownbill | Wm & Mary Pattison | Helen Pattison" - born the 19th, baptised the 19th of January 1835, sponsor Helen Pattison. Row image saved at sources/pattison-spofforth-rg4-3698-2026-08-16/ in the repo.
THE CORROBORATION - 1851 census, HO107 piece 2283 folio 589 page 20, Kirk Deighton, schedule 78, read on the image (1851 HAS a relationship column): Mary Pattison, Head, WIDOW, 56, 'formerly farmer', born Yorkshire, Markingfield; John, Son, unmarried, 26, gardener, born Linton [= [939]]; Martha, Daur, unmarried, 16, born 'Swinnow, Wetherby' - Swinnow adjoins Stockeld Park. Two independent records state the same mother. Images saved at sources/pattison-1851-census-kirk-deighton-2026-08-16/.
WHAT THIS DOES NOT GIVE - (1) [938] Mary's maiden surname: the register records parents under the married surname only, so the maiden name is a REAL NEGATIVE for this route; her census birthplace, Markingfield abt 1795, is the new search key (the Markenfield recusant pocket near Ripon). (2) [937] William's death: he was dead by 30 Mar 1851 - the census records Mary as widow - but no death event is written; research-first. (3) Sponsor Helen Pattison is a lead, not a tree entry.
