1915 When his father, J. J. Johnson, died in Austin in November 1915, the funeral notice listed the sons as "E. A. Johnson of Waco, Joe Johnson of Refugio, John Johnson of Austin." Joe was then living at Refugio, near the Gulf coast. His father was buried from St. Mary's Catholic Church.

1919 His wife, Flora, died early on a Wednesday morning in February 1919 "at the family home, 605 San Antonio Street" in Austin. Her funeral was held at the house, put back a day to Friday morning, and she was buried in Boggy Cemetery.

1938 When he died in September 1938, aged 76, the Statesman called him "a pioneer resident of Austin and Travis county." He lay in state at the funeral home on South Congress and was taken to St. Ignatius church for a Catholic service. He was buried in Boggy cemetery, and his six sons-in-law carried the coffin.

PROOF CLASS: BOTH PARENTS = DIRECT (reviewed 4 Sep 2026). His 1938 Texas death certificate states the father in field 13 and the mother's maiden name in field 15. Audited 27 Jul 2026. BOTH PARENTS EVIDENCED, WITH COUNTRY OF ORIGIN. Death certificate, Travis Co., 16 Sep 1938, file 43580, image 40394_b062153-01990 (Texas, U.S., Death Certificates, 1903-1982 (Ancestry coll. 2272)): field 13 FATHER = 'John Johnson' (b. England); field 15 MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME = 'Martha Patterson' (b. England); his own birthplace England. Buried Boggy Cemetery. CONFLICT TO WATCH: the certificate says 60 years in the U.S. as of 1938 (arrival c.1878), against the 1872-74 crossing bracket in johnson-branch-research.md; but it also says 50 years in the city, which cannot be right when the family is in the 1880 Travis Co. census.
