Research notes
Working notes from the research, kept verbatim — what was read, what it proved, what stays open. Many open with a line grading the parentage; what the grades mean.
Research note · 16 Aug 2026
PROOF CLASS: BOTH PARENTS = DIRECT - the Esh Laude RC baptism of 16 Jan 1831 (DRO 419739) enters him "son of George Johnson and Mary Fairbrother"; the father is named again on the 1915 Texas death certificate.
AUDITED 16 Aug 2026 - BOTH PARENTS PROVEN; THE MOTHER IS FAIRBROTHER, NOT MASON. Roman Catholic baptism, Esh Laude St Michael's, Lanchester: 16 Jan 1831 John Johnson, born 14 Jan 1831, son of George Johnson and Mary Fairbrother (DRO 419739). Supersedes the 15 Aug reading below.
The register gives his birth as 14 Jan 1831 and baptises him two days later, which settles the discrepancy recorded on 15 Aug: the 1915 Texas death certificate gave 14 Jan 1830 with a death age of 85, and the contemporaneous register is preferred. ProofMother set to 1. ProofFather was already 1 and is now evidenced twice - Durham in 1831 and Texas in 1915.
The mother's maiden surname is FAIRBROTHER on five entries of this family at Esh Laude (Durham Records Online 419739, 412606, 423665, 409647, 409118); Mason appeared only on [874] herself and carried no citation. Her name row is corrected in the same write. DISCREPANCY, recorded and not resolved: the 1833 entry for his sister Frances reads "Margaret Farbrother" - his own entry names Mary Fairbrother directly, so that outlier bears on Frances's attachment, not on his parentage.
--- 15 Aug 2026, SUPERSEDED ON THE MOTHER; the death-certificate reading itself stands ---
AUDITED 15 Aug 2026 - FATHER PROVEN FROM THE 1915 TEXAS DEATH CERTIFICATE; MOTHER IS A RECORDED NEGATIVE. Texas State Board of Health, Standard Certificate of Death, registered no. 677, Travis County, City of Austin, for John Joseph Johnson; read on the image 15 Aug 2026 (Ancestry coll. 2272, record 21621248, image 40394_b061811-01848). Field 10 NAME OF FATHER reads "George Johnson" and field 11 BIRTHPLACE OF FATHER reads "England". That NAMES the father, and it corroborates him independently: this man's own birthplace field reads "Durham, England" and the tree's [873] George Johnson died in Durham, England, in 1846. ProofFather set to 1 on that basis.
RECORDED NEGATIVE - so that nobody re-hunts this document. Field 12 MAIDEN NAME OF MOTHER and field 13 BIRTHPLACE OF MOTHER are BOTH BLANK. Field 11 carries legible cursive at the same resolution, so this is an absence ON THE DOCUMENT, not a limit of the reading. The certificate therefore does NOT corroborate [874] Mary Ann Mason as his mother, and ProofMother STAYS 0. That link has to be answered from the English records instead - the April 1858 Croxdale Chapel marriage, the Lanchester baptisms, or the 1841/1851 census.
DISCREPANCIES, recorded and NOT resolved: the certificate gives birth 14 Jan 1830 with death age 85, against the tree's 14 Jan 1831; and the physician's hand gives death 24 Dec 1915 against the tree's 26 Dec 1915 (Ancestry's index transcribes both 24 Dec and [26 Dec]). Nothing was changed here.
ActualText was deliberately NOT filled on C4681/C4685/C4691. Those three citations carry TWO distinct Ancestry anIDs (1082518165763 and 1082461936070) and this session could not map either to record 21621248, so writing the transcript would have risked attaching this reading to the wrong record. INFORMANT: not applicable to the grade - this half rests on the 1831 Esh Laude Roman Catholic baptismal register (DRO 419739), a contemporaneous parish original, a record type which has no informant field for a reporter to be recorded in. The 1915 Texas death certificate named on the class line is corroboration only, and its item 17 has NOT been read - if this half is ever re-argued from the certificate, read that field first. Recorded 19 Sep 2026 under proof-standard.md 2e (register K762); it changes no class and moves no flag.
