Made in the Shade

When I titled this collection of songs ‘Weathered,’ I didn’t know how true that title would feel this summer. The 3 songs on this EP are all set in challenging environments, but this last one provides a bit of relief from the intensity. I wrote Made in the Shade with Jamie Lin Wilson and Jason Eady.

I’m a fan of shade, particularly in the summer. You might call me a “shade aficionado,” and I subscribe to Shade Quarterly. I have played some shady venues. The indoor ones are the shadiest, I have found, though there are some outdoor venues have pretty good shade.

A recording studio usually has pretty good shade, and Jamie, Gabriel Rhodes, Rick Richards, and I worked in Kimmie Rhodes’s studio on a bright, hot day ten summers ago recording this song. Jamie and I sang, and Jamie played great harmonica, Rick played drums, and Gabriel played solos on acoustic guitar and produced the project. It was a good way to hide out from the heat of the day, singing and making music with friends.

We turned even the air conditioner off when we were rolling ’cause we wanted clear high fi sounds, you know?

Hope you enjoy this summer day and the song we made in the shade for you.
