The Hook
New year, new single. This one says if you woke up this morning, you’re already lucky.
The Vibe
“Ain’t We Lucky?” is a gratitude song with a shuffle and a swing—the kind of track you’d hear on a porch or in a car with the windows down. Produced by Gordy Quist (The Band of Heathens) at The Finishing School in Austin, the song is rooted in specific moments rather than abstractions.
It opens with morning coffee and ends at a show where young and old sing along together. In between, there’s a drive through the country, sun in the eyes, a big wide valley, and the quiet recognition that none of it was guaranteed.
“I wrote it because I needed to remind myself. The premise is simple: waking up is lucky. Coffee is lucky. Driving with someone you love into a wide valley—that’s lucky too. Maybe we all need the reminder as much as I did.”
The Credits & Lineage
This track was brought to life by a group of musicians who know exactly how to find the heart of a Texas shuffle:
- Producer: Gordy Quist (The Band of Heathens)
- Musicians: Matt Tedder (Guitar), Trevor Nealon (Keys), Z Lynch (Bass), Clint Simmons (Drums), and Gordy Quist (Harmony Vocals).
The Visual Connection
Continuing the tradition started with “Fats Domino,” the cover artwork for “Ain’t We Lucky?” is an original watercolor I painted during the writing process. These visual pieces have become a way for me to further explore the landscapes and stories within the songs. A collection of this visual art is scheduled for publication later this year.
