Three Arches in One Day

October 4, the day after the Arches half marathon. Three arches, morning to sundown.

Mesa Arch, Canyonlands. Late morning.

Landscape Arch, Devils Garden. Mid-afternoon, with the sun tucked right under the span.

Delicate Arch, a little after six.

Then I stayed put and kept shooting while the sun went down. Here are 55 of those photos, end to end.

And the same 55 photos as color. One stripe per photo, in order. The top row is the sky, the middle row is the brightest rock, and the bottom row is the whole frame averaged together. The sky goes from blue to a pale gold. The rock starts tan-orange, burns almost red near the end, then goes brown as the light leaves it.

Three bands of color stripes, one stripe per timelapse photo: sky fading from blue to pale gold, rock deepening from orange to red then brown, and the whole-frame average warming
