READ FROM THE LIVE SITE 31 Jul 2026, http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~crouch/genealogy/p3.htm, with controls on the same fetch: Crouch x245, Tennessee x11, Washington x14. "Elijah Crouch M, b. 1770, d. 1825. Father: John Crouch b. c 1727, d. c 1811. Mother: Sarah Barbury b. 1729, d. 1782. [grandfather] Joseph Crouch d. 1742. Birth*: Elijah Crouch was born in 1770 at VIRGINIA. He was the son of John Crouch and Sarah Barbury. Marriage*: Elijah Crouch married MARY ELLIS on 16 January 1792 at WASHINGTON, TENNESSEE. Death*: Elijah Crouch died in 1825 at McMINN, TENNESSEE. Family: Mary Ellis b. 1772" ⭐ FOUR OF THIS TREE'S VALUES MATCH THIS PAGE EXACTLY — Elijah 1770/1825, Mary Ellis b. 1772, Sarah Barbary b. 1729/30, and a John Crouch above him. That is a copy relationship, not a coincidence. ⛔ THE MECHANICAL CAUSE OF THE ERROR IS ONE WORD: 'Washington' was resolved to the WRONG STATE — Washington Co., PENNSYLVANIA instead of Washington Co., TENNESSEE. ⭐⭐ AND IT LOCATES THE FABRICATED JOINT: here SARAH BARBARY IS THE WIFE OF JOHN CROUCH (c.1727), an age-appropriate pair, and Elijah is THEIR son. This tree interpolates a 'Nathan Crouch b. 1750' between them and hands him a wife twenty years his senior. Independently, a search of the Somerset Co., Maryland records finds NO NATHAN AT ALL (control: 'Nathan' returns 1,066 hits in the same tax files). ⚠️ ELIJAH IS LISTED HERE WITH MARY ELLIS AND NO CHILDREN, and 'Benedict' appears nowhere on the site — so the Benedict->Elijah link was NOT inherited from this source; it was made separately, on a name. Mary Ellis is given NO DEATH DATE here, so this tree's d.1810 is unsourced, and a SECOND Mary Ellis (b. c.1765, wife of Edmund Bean) sits in the same compilation. ⚠️ THIS SOURCE IS A COMPILATION WITH NO CITATIONS. It proves what was copied. It does not prove the Tennessee facts.

1880 U.S. Census, Fallowfield Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania; NARA T9 roll 1201, p. 245A, Enumeration District 248; dwelling and family 10. Enumerated 1 June 1880 by Henry Carson. Household as written: "Crouch Benedict, W M 80, Farmer" - "Charity, W F 61, Wife, Keeping House" - "Crouch A. B. C., W M 26, Son, Farmer" [= [2733] Allison Benedict Crouch, b. 1853] - "Emma, W F 24, Daughter-in-law, Keeping house" - "Eunie, W F 3" - "Norwell, W M 7/12". ⛔ A FINISHED NEGATIVE, AND IT RETIRES A NAMED NEXT DOCUMENT. This sheet was ranked as the cheapest existing statement of where [114] Elijah Crouch was born, because the 1880 schedule records the birthplace of each person's father and mother. IT DOES NOT ANSWER IT: on Benedict's own line the Birthplace-of-Father and Birthplace-of-Mother cells are BLANK, and a bold later archival annotation reading "Fal" (for Fallowfield) is written across his Birthplace column. Do not re-run this document for Elijah's birthplace. ✪ WHAT IT DOES GIVE, on the row below his: "Charity, W F 61, Wife, Keeping House ... Penn | Pa | M.D" - so [2730] Charity (Wallace) Crouch was born in Pennsylvania, HER FATHER in Pennsylvania, and HER MOTHER IN MARYLAND. The 1893 Commemorative sketch (S388) calls Charity "a sister of his first wife" [113] Rebecca Wallace, so this is a first statement about the Wallace parents' origins - reached through the 1893 sisterhood claim, i.e. one compiled step removed, and therefore a lead rather than proof of Rebecca's parentage. ⚠️ Her age 61 implies b. abt 1819, against Find A Grave's data field (1812) and its transcribed inscription ("died Feb 6, 1909 in the 86 year of his age", implying abt 1823): three informants, three answers, unresolved. READ ON THE IMAGE by Claude, 5 Aug 2026, on a local crop of the full-resolution sheet (4148 x 4360) - the Ancestry viewer's zoom drift produced two different row alignments in succession and could not settle it. p. 1310, right column: "ISAAC T. CROUCH. ... The gentleman of whom we write is a son of Benedict, and grandson of Elijah Crouch. The latter, who was of English descent, reared a family of four children, viz.: Elisha, Benedict, Stephen, and Mary, all of whom lived over fourscore years, and are now deceased. Benedict Crouch was born in June, 1800, near Jefferson, Greene Co., Penn., there passing his early youth. He learned the saddler's trade, which he followed a short time, and was then married to Rebecca, daughter of James Wallace. ... They were tenants on a farm for several years after their marriage, when he bought 288 acres near Bentleyville, Washington Co., Penn. Here he carried on an extensive farming business, and reared a large family of children, as follows: James, Sarah, John, William, Adah, Mary Ann, Thomas, Nathan, Hiram, Isaac T., Elizabeth, Bennett and" [continues p. 1313] "Nesbit". p. 1313, left column: "... William, then residing in Arkansas, felt that duty called him to defend his home and family rather than the nation; he therefore entered the Confederate army, and served throughout the conflict as captain of an Arkansas regiment. Benedict Crouch, for his second spouse, married Charity Wallace, a sister of his first wife, and the children by this union were S. Bentley, Hudson C. and Allison B. ... Isaac T. Crouch, son of Benedict and Rebecca Crouch, was born August 22, 1842, near Beallsville, Washington Co., Penn." READ ON THE PAGE IMAGES by Claude, 5 Aug 2026 - both folios and running heads verified. Research notes

Working notes from the research, kept verbatim — what was read, what it proved, what stays open. Many open with a line grading the parentage; what the grades mean.

Research note · 12 Sep 2026
PROOF CLASS: PARENTS = UNDETERMINED, 12 Sep 2026 - BOTH PARENT LINKS ARE CUT. Benedict Crouch's parentage is NOT KNOWN. The F74 attachment (Elijah Crouch x Mary Ellis) is DETACHED: it rested on ONE 1893 informant for the father and on NOTHING AT ALL for the mother. ★ WHAT THE FATHER CLAIM ACTUALLY WAS: the 1893 Beers commemorative sketch of Benedict's own son Isaac T. Crouch names a father Elijah - informant testimony, one generation removed - and it names NO MOTHER. That sentence is the whole of the evidence, and it is preserved here because the structure can no longer carry it: a note can say 'his father was called Elijah', a parent link cannot say it without also naming WHICH Elijah. ⛔ AND THE MOTHER CLAIM HAD NO EVIDENCE OF ANY KIND. [2652] Mary Ellis is a Tennessee woman, married in Washington Co., TENNESSEE in 1792 and buried at Sinking Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Carter Co., Tennessee. Not one record has ever connected her to Benedict. ◎ F74 WAS NOT A FAMILY - IT WAS A MERGE OF AT LEAST THREE, and the birth data says so. Measured from the database 12 Sep 2026, its nine children fall into four clusters: TENNESSEE 1792-95 (William E., Warren Co.; Elizabeth, Washington Co.) - MARYLAND 1797-1806 (Samuel W.; Nathan, born CECIL CO.; Stephen) - PENNSYLVANIA 1800-02 (BENEDICT, Greene Co.; Elisha, Washington Co.) - ILLINOIS 1821 (Joseph E.); and Mary, who carries no dates or places at all. One couple did not bear children in Tennessee in 1795, Cecil Co. Maryland in 1798, Greene Co. Pennsylvania in 1800, Washington Co. Pennsylvania in 1802 and Maryland again in 1806. ★ EIGHT OF THE NINE CARRY ZERO CITATIONS OF ANY KIND; only Benedict carries any. ⭐ AND THERE IS NO PENNSYLVANIA ELIJAH CROUCH TO ATTACH HIM TO. FamilySearch full text returns ZERO records of an Elijah Crouch in any primary series in Washington Co., PA, against a control of 22 'Benedict Crouch' records in the same county and corpus - five deeds, five deed books, four grantor-index entries, a Will Book of 1882 and a Probate Estate File - and a date-coverage control ('James Wallace' deeds of 1809, 1818-21 and 1823). Crumrine's 1882 county history agrees: thirty Crouches, including Hiram, Ady, Hudson and Nathan - four of Benedict's own sons - and never once an Elijah. ⛔ SO NO NEW 'ELIJAH CROUCH OF WASHINGTON CO., PA' WAS CREATED TO RECEIVE HIM. Adding a person to hold a name supplied by a single informant is the same move that produced this graft; it would look like progress and be a second fabrication. ⭐ STILL TRUE AND PRESERVED: HIS RECORDED BIRTHPLACE IS CONTRADICTED. 'Jefferson, Greene Co., Pennsylvania, 1800' does not survive - there is NO Crouch in the 1800 federal census of Greene Co. (1,376 households, complete county index, controls good), none in Bates's History of Greene County (1888), none in the published Greene Co. will abstracts, and none in the 1850 census of Jefferson Township itself. ⭐ AND A REAL CROUCH FAMILY IS DOCUMENTED WHERE HIS SON WAS BORN: Crouches are attested in the NOTTINGHAM-SOMERSET-FALLOWFIELD-STRABANE cluster of southwestern Washington Co., PA from 1810 to 1882. ⚠ TWO STATEMENTS FROM THE 31 JUL 2026 VERSION OF THIS NOTE WERE STALE AND STAY CORRECTED: (1) the 1810 census image, NARA M252 roll 57, Washington Co. PA, Nottingham Twp p. 71, WAS READ on 5 Aug 2026 (register L17) and RETIRED the lead - the county's whole Crouch presence in 1810 is TWO households, John of Nottingham and William of Strabane, no Elijah and no Benedict-bearing household, and the Nottingham John belongs to ROBERT Crouch's separate line; (2) 'NOTTINGHAM TWP ADJOINS BEALLSVILLE' is wrong - Crumrine puts Beallsville in WEST PIKE RUN township. ☞ WHAT WOULD REOPEN IT: any Washington Co., PA instrument naming Benedict's father - a deed of gift, a guardianship, an estate settlement, an orphans' court paper - or any record of an Elijah Crouch in that county at all. He is now a ring-6 DEAD END, which is the honest state and puts him in the discovery pass rather than leaving him as a contradiction. ⛔ WHAT WAS AND WAS NOT DONE: ONE ChildTable row was deleted. NOBODY WAS DELETED. [114] Elijah Crouch, [2652] Mary Ellis and the eight other children of F74 all remain in this database as an unattached group - they may well be somebody's correct research, imported long ago; they are simply not Benedict's family. His wife [113] Rebecca Wallace and all his children are untouched. Registers K644-K651. Evidence: ancestry/proof-summary-114-crouch-parents-2026-09-12.md; memo ancestry/crouch-branch-research.md.
