AUDITED 6 Aug 2026 - GIVEN NAME ESTABLISHED. The placeholder "Daddy" is replaced by Joseph W. Two independent records: the Arkansas death certificate no. 1241 of his daughter [192] Julia Sterling Bond (filed 26 Mar 1936, read on the image) gives NAME OF FATHER "Joseph Sterling"; and the Pulaski Co. marriage return of 8 Dec 1842 (FHL film 1302797, original manuscript, filed 20 Dec 1842 by clerk H. Haralson) records "Mr Joseph W. Sterling and Miss Sarah W. Willett, aged sixteen ... Little Rock, Pulaski County ... according to the forms and Customs of the Meth[odist Episcopal Church]", signed H. R. K[ern], whose deacon's parchment from the Pittsburgh Annual Conference is recorded on the preceding page of the same book. DEATH AND BURIAL from the joint Mount Holly gravestone with his wife (memorial 105775929, photograph read 6 Aug 2026): "[HER] HUSBAND / JOSEPH W. STERLING / DIED NOV. 14, 1846". His own memorial 105775862 records no birth date at all. ⛔ THE EXISTING BIRTH "abt 1817, Maryland" IS UNCITED AND IS LEFT UNTOUCHED, BUT IT IS CONTRADICTED: certificate 1241 gives his birthplace as "Dont Know / Ala." - Alabama, not Maryland - and the same certificate gives Alabama for the mother too. Do not treat Maryland as settled. Full account: ancestry/sterling-willett-cates-junction.md; register K123-K126. 18 AUG 2026 - HIS PROBATE PACKET EXISTS AND IS NUMBERED. The Pulaski Co. Index to Probate Records, L-Z, 1819-1920 (the county's probate-packet register; Ancestry collection 8638, film 007713865 img 534) carries the only Sterling entry: 'STERLING, Joseph W. / d. c. 1847 / 482' - packet No. 482, opened on his 14 Nov 1846 death. The packets are not digitized; the holder is the Arkansas State Archives (which made the film). Because he died first, with Sarah alive and both children minors, the packet is the record class most likely to name the widow in legal form - the named settling candidate for Julia's mother link (F420). No separate 'Sterling, Julia' guardianship entry exists in the index. Crop: ancestry/sources/sterling-pulaski-probate-index-2026-08-18/. Register K220. --- 24 Aug 2026 (K318, K319) - HIS DEATH DATE NOW HAS A CONTEMPORANEOUS SOURCE, AND HIS ESTATE IS LOCATED IN THE RECORD BOOKS. The tree's 14 Nov 1846 had rested on no contemporaneous instrument. Pulaski County Bonds 1839-1859, p. 229 carries the administratrix bond of his widow SARAH W. STERLING, dated at Little Rock 16 NOVEMBER 1846 - two days later, which is exactly when a widow qualifies. Sureties Henry Griffith and Ebenezer Cummins; penal sum $2,000. Read on the image. His estate is PACKET NO. 482 in the Pulaski loose-probate index (Baker), and the record books are annotated with the packet numbers: '# 482' is written in the margin of Probate Records 1849-1859, image 235, beside 'In the Estate of Joseph W. Sterling deceased', where the FINAL SETTLEMENT was made at the December 1852 term. That margin annotation is the session's instrument finding - it means a full-text search can land on a packet number instead of scanning 1,870 unlabelled frames of the loose-packet film. STILL UNREAD: the distribution clause of the final settlement, which is where named heirs would appear; the order of 30 April 1852 at page 335 of the same book; and the loose packet itself, on FamilySearch film 1183827 / DGS 7117272 (box 107), which is NOT in full text. --- 24 Aug 2026 (K322) - THE FINAL SETTLEMENT READ AT FULL RESOLUTION, AND ITS HEADLINE IS NEGATIVE: IT DISTRIBUTES TO NOBODY. The 4,485 x 3,421 image (about seven times the detail the FamilySearch viewer renders) was downloaded and cropped. The #482 final settlement, Dec 1852 term, is an Account Current of 'Wm R--- Senior as administrator ... with the Estate of Joseph W. Sterling deceased'. DEBIT: proceeds of the bond of R. F. Ga--- and THOMAS W. GRAY, collected at the August Term of the CIRCUIT COURT OF PRAIRIE COUNTY, 1852 - $512.92 (the estate's largest asset by far, and litigated OUTSIDE Pulaski County); account against HAMILTON RIGGS & others $48.00; account against R. R. GRIFFITHS and others $36.00; account against Traff--- & Cocke $7.40. TOTAL ASSETS $604.32. CREDIT: paid E. H. ENGLISH Esq for services as attorney collecting the Ga---/Gray debt, $41.29; and then the residue 'paid over to Estate of Sarah W. Sterling deceased being balance due her as admx in Settlement of Estate of Joseph W. Sterling decd made 30th April 1852, See page 335 of this record'. SO THERE IS NO DISTRIBUTION TO CHILDREN. The estate pays an attorney and empties into his WIDOW'S estate. The standing expectation on this line - that a final settlement is where named heirs appear - is FALSE for this document. Recorded as a controlled disappointment. STILL UNREAD, and now precisely identified: PAGE 335 of this same record, the SETTLEMENT OF HIS ESTATE MADE 30 APRIL 1852 - a real, earlier, separately recorded settlement, and the only remaining place in this series where heirs might be named. Also unread: the continuation of this account on image 236, and the Prairie County Circuit Court suit of August 1852. NAMES NEW TO THIS PROJECT: R. F. Ga---, Thomas W. Gray, Hamilton Riggs, R. R. GRIFFITHS (note: the surety on his widow's 1846 administratrix bond was Henry Griffith/Griffiths - possibly the same family, unexamined), Traff--- & Cocke, and E. H. English Esq, the estate's attorney (probably Elbert H. English, later Chief Justice of Arkansas - UNVERIFIED). THE ADMINISTRATOR'S NAME IS STILL NOT SETTLED, and the RECORD ITSELF is inconsistent: the body says 'Wm R--- Senior' twice, while the signature two lines above the entry reads 'Signed Wm R--- Jr. Administrator'. The surname is WILLIAM BROWN - see the 24 Aug 2026 (K325) section below, where page 334 writes it out in full. My own earlier reading of the abbreviated signature as 'Ream' was WRONG. --- 24 Aug 2026 (K325) - PAGE 335 IS READ, AND IT NAMES NO HEIR EITHER. LOCATED at IMAGE 192 (page 334), continuing to IMAGE 193 (page 335) of Pulaski Probate Records 1849-1859 - the settlement of 30 April 1852 that three lines of the December 1852 accounts pointed to. WHAT IT IS: 'In the matter of the account current and settlement with the Estate of Joseph W. Sterling deceased. And now on this day the account current filed by WILLIAM BROWN SENIOR as ADMINISTRATOR DE BONIS NON of the Estate of Joseph W. Sterling deceased, as a settlement of the accounts of SARAH W. STERLING deceased, LATE ADMINISTRATRIX, with said estate, is taken up for examination; and the respective parties appeared by their ATTORNEYS and the EXCEPTIONS FILED to said settlement are heard and argued by counsel...' SO IT WAS A CONTESTED SETTLEMENT - there were parties, with counsel, filing exceptions. BUT THE PARTIES ARE NOT NAMED in the transcript, and no child, heir or distributee appears anywhere in the entry. THE THIRD SETTLEMENT IN A ROW TO NAME NOBODY. THE ACCOUNTING: Sarah is charged with the balance in her hands per her account current filed 8 JUNE 1848 and confirmed by the court, $1,011.97. Credits include a note of JAMES LAWSON (uncollectable, barred by the statute of limitations, $200.00); LIGHTFOOT's bond (insolvent); judgments against CORNELIUS RIGGS ($48.10) and CORNELIUS GRIFFITH ($36.14), both uncollectable; the attorney's fee of E. CUMMINS for services to the estate in ANDERSON's notes and effecting a compromise with Anderson; the bond of B. F. GUDEN and THOMAS W. GRAY taken in lieu of Anderson's bond and turned over to Wm Brown Sen, admr de bonis non; and her DOWER INTEREST IN THE PURCHASE MONEY FOR LAND SOLD TO ANDERSON. Final balance due Sarah W. Sterling, late administratrix: $1,107.89, including $95.92 widow's dower retained. CORRECTIONS THIS FORCES ON THE SECTION ABOVE: 'Hamilton Riggs' is CORNELIUS RIGGS; 'R. R. Griffiths' is CORNELIUS GRIFFITH; 'R. F. Ga---' is B. F. GUDEN. And the estate's attorney E. CUMMINS is EBENEZER CUMMINS, one of the two sureties on Sarah's 1846 administratrix bond - the same man serving the estate twice, which weakens any inference that a surety must have been kin. NEW THREAD, NOT YET PULLED: the estate's land was SOLD TO ANDERSON and the sale generated notes, a compromise, a substituted bond and a dower interest in the purchase money. That is a DEED and CHANCERY trail in Pulaski County, and it is the same instrument class the 1936 obituary's 'Fourth and Main' pointer opened. Neither has been searched.
