PROOF CLASS: FATHER = DIRECT (4 Sep 2026) - Arkansas death certificate 1241 names him in full. MOTHER = ARGUMENT (graded 31 Aug 2026) - the 8 Dec 1842 marriage return, 43 days before her birth, is the discriminator among the sisters; see below. AUDITED 6 Aug 2026 - PARENTAGE CORRECTED ON THE DIRECT LINE, AND THE BIRTH DATE SETTLED. Mother changed from [1163] Ellen Lofton Willet to [3403] Sarah W. Willett, Ellen's sister; [1163] is Julia's AUNT. Find A Grave memorial 7732315 states "Daughter of Sarah Willett and Joseph William Sterling; lost her parents at an early age and was raised by her aunt, Mrs. Ellen Lofton Cates", and the Mount Holly gravestone of Sarah Willett Sterling (memorial 105775929, photograph read 6 Aug 2026) reads "MY SISTER / SARAH WILLETT STERLING / BORN MAY 1[3], 1825 / DIED APRIL 30, 1849 / [HER] HUSBAND / JOSEPH W. STERLING / DIED NOV. 14, 1846". WHAT FORCED THE CHANGE: family F421 carries a marriage 11 Mar 1834 Lauderdale Co. Alabama, so [1163] was Isaac Cates's wife from 1834, and [1819] Felix Pratt Cates was born to her 28 Oct 1843 - 279 days after Julia's birth, i.e. conceived about 13 days after it. ORPHANING IS DATED by the same stone: father d. Nov 1846, mother d. Apr 1849, and the 1850 census (Little Rock, p. 356b, dw 580/fam 588, 20 Sep 1850) finds Julia aged 7 in Isaac and Ellen Cates's household with her grandmother Julia Willett. BIRTH DATE CHANGED 22 Jan 1843 -> 20 JAN 1843 by Owen's decision, 6 Aug 2026. The old date was a SPLICE that no source states: the day came from the Find A Grave / Mount Holly cluster, which actually reads 22 Jan 1846, and the year from elsewhere. 20 Jan 1843 is what the Arkansas certificate of death no. 1241 records (filed 26 Mar 1936, read on the image, cited here as C1755), and it agrees with the 1850 census age 7 and the 1860 census age 16. The 1846 reading rests on about one informant, and that source misdates Felix Pratt Cates's death as 13 Jan 1906 where his gravestone photograph reads 13 Jan 1905. The Arkansas State Archives supplied the Arkansas Gazette of 22 Mar 1936, p. 6 ('Mrs. Julia Sterling Bond, Native Of Little Rock, Dies.'). It was ranked as one of the three documents that might settle her mother. It names no father, no mother and no sibling, and it is NOT an independent second witness to death certificate no. 1241 - same week, same household, almost certainly the same informant (her son W. C. Bond of 2610 Arch St.). Recorded as a controlled disappointment, not a win. WHAT IT DOES GIVE: died at her home, 2606 Arch St., 'early Saturday' = 21 Mar 1936 (computed), matching the tree. Member of First Methodist Episcopal Church, South. BORN AND REARED IN A HOUSE AT FOURTH AND MAIN STREETS, on the site of the W. B. Worthen Company Bank building - a land pointer, and Pulaski County deed and chancery records are an instrument class this line has never tried. Childhood friend of David Owen Dodd. Married Dr. Bond 'during the second year of the Civil war' - a newspaper phrase, NOT a marriage record, and F126's marriage event E8205 (15 Jul 1863) is deliberately NOT edited on it. NINE CHILDREN are claimed and the tree holds SEVEN in F126; the two survivors named are Mrs. H. S. Hollis of Whittier, Cal. (= [285] Josephine, whose move from Arizona to California was previously unevidenced) and William C. Bond (= [286]). BURIAL: 'Burial will be in Mount Holly cemetery in charge of P. H. Ruebel & Co.' This is an ANNOUNCEMENT printed the morning of the funeral, not a report - unlike [191]'s burial, which came from a retrospective funeral report. The cemetery is therefore recorded in the citation; E940 is deliberately left WITHOUT A DATE. The paper of Monday 23 Mar 1936 would settle it and has not been obtained. It gives no age, so the 1843-vs-1846 conflict stands. --- 31 Aug 2026 (K340-K341) - MATERNITY DECIDED. ProofMother SET TO 1 on F420, and ring 4 of the parentage rings closes: rings 1-4 are now 16/16 proven. WHAT THE OPEN QUESTION ACTUALLY WAS. Not "did Joseph have a prior wife" but WHICH WILLETT SISTER, because Arkansas certificate of death no. 1241 names her father in full and her mother as "Willett" - surname only, no given name. The flag stood at 1/0 as an honest gap, not an unset flag. WHAT CLOSES IT. Joseph W. Sterling married Sarah W. Willett on 8 Dec 1842 at Little Rock, and Julia was born 20 Jan 1843 - FORTY-THREE DAYS LATER. She was born inside that marriage, and so were both her sisters ([1165] c.1845, [1164] c.1846). The marriage return is an original manuscript read on the image TWICE, from two independent filmings: FHL film 1302797, Marriage Record Part B, img 31/511 (register K123c, read 6 Aug 2026), and Arkansas County Marriages 1837-1957, film 004326300, img 934 of 979, register page 57, ARK 3:1:S3HY-XXD3-RFY (register K340, read 31 Aug 2026). The second filming is the cleaner one and resolves every bracket the first had to reconstruct: "This is to certify that I united in marriage on the evening of Dec 8th 1842, Mr Joseph W. Sterling, aged twenty five years and Miss Sarah W. Willett, aged sixteen years, all of the City of Little Rock, Pulaski County, State of Arkansas. Done according to the forms and customs of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America. Witness my name / H. R. Kern, Minister of the Gospel, Dec. 20, 1842." Filed Dec. 20, 1842, H. Haralson, Clerk. The facing page (56) of the same opening records "Rev. Henry R. Kern's credentials", filed 17 Dec 1842 - so the minister is identified by a DIFFERENT document than the one he signed. MEASURED, NOT ASSUMED: [1162] Joseph belongs to F420 and to no other family; [3403] Sarah belongs to F420 and to no other family. THE OTHER SISTERS ARE EXCLUDED. Ellen Lofton Willett was Isaac Thomas Cates's wife from 11 Mar 1834 (F421, a cited marriage) and bore Felix Pratt Cates 28 Oct 1843. Susan R. Willett married Tilman B. Parks and lived in Pontotoc County, Mississippi (K337). Of the Willett sisters, only Sarah was married to Joseph Sterling when Julia was born. TWO RESIDUALS, STATED RATHER THAN BURIED. (a) A birth 43 days after the wedding means the conception, about mid-April 1842, PRECEDED the marriage; the ordinary reading is that the pregnancy occasioned it, and Sarah is called "Miss" in the return. (b) ELLEN IS EXCLUDED BY CIRCUMSTANCE, NOT BY BIOLOGY - Julia born 20 Jan 1843 and Felix conceived about early Feb 1843 is tight but possible. Nothing biological rules Ellen out; the marriage does. For Ellen to be the mother would require an adulterine birth, surnamed Sterling, six weeks after Joseph married her sister, with no positive evidence of any kind. AND ONE ARGUMENT DELIBERATELY NOT USED. That Julia was raised by Ellen Cates does NOT discriminate between the sisters - it fits either, and shows only that the mother was a Willett, which the death certificate already said. An earlier draft of this reasoning offered it as "maternal-kin fostering" evidence and it is withdrawn. THE MARRIAGE DATE IS THE DISCRIMINATOR AND IT IS THE ONLY ONE.
