Life as they lived it
Not the dates — the person. What the records happen to show of work, habits, possessions and the odd episode. Each line says where it comes from.
1894 He began as a retail druggist in his father's store, bought the retail business at the corner of Rock and Markham streets in 1894, and in 1911 sold it to Will C. Bond & Co. to deal wholesale only, from 115 East Markham, building up a trade that reached beyond Arkansas.
work · The 1911 sale announcement, and his obituary in the Little Rock Daily News, 25 March 1922
1909 In 1909 he and the Gibson Drug Co. put their names to a newspaper notice recommending an oil-of-wintergreen skin wash from the D. D. D. Laboratories of Chicago as "a positive cure for eczema", with trial bottles at 25 cents instead of a dollar.
episode · Arkansas Democrat notice, 9 November 1909
1914 He married Alice Plunkett on 30 April 1914 at her parents' home on Arch Street; his uncle the Rev. Dr. Bond of El Paso performed the ceremony and his brother William Cates Bond was best man. The couple went East on their wedding journey and were at home after 5 June at 221 East Sixteenth Street.
episode · Wedding report in the Little Rock press, 1 May 1914
1918 He sold his own remedy, Wampine, "The Great Blood Purifier", for scrofula, eczema, rheumatism and malaria at $1.20 a bottle, trade supplied by John B. Bond, wholesale druggist.
work · Newspaper advertisement, August 1918
1922 He died suddenly of heart disease at the family residence on Arch Street at 9:30 on a Friday night in March 1922, aged 53, "one of the most progressive and popular young business men of the city". Within three months the drug company was reorganised and sold to Hessig-Ellis of Memphis.
