PROOF CLASS: FATHER = ARGUMENT (Owen, 11 Oct 2026) - William Thompson of Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co., Va., will 1785. Correlated deeds, tax lists and the 1801 chancery suit of his heirs. Registers K527, K995-K1002.
AUDITED 11 Oct 2026 - FATHER ENTERED: William Thompson of Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia, whose will is dated 29 Jan 1785 and was proved 28 Jun 1785. No single record names Richard's father; the link rests on several records read together. His mother is NOT entered.
THE QUESTION. Was [758] Richard Thompson, husband of Sally Yeatman, the son Richard named in the 1785 will of William Thompson of Washington Parish?
THE EVIDENCE. (1) The will leaves the estate, after the widow Anne's death, to be divided "between my children Richard, Betsey Lovel and Maria Thompson", and also names a son William and a daughter Mary (copy in LVA chancery cause 193-1801-002, image 9, register K527). (2) In 1801 those heirs sued: "your Orator Richard Thompson and Your Oratrix Elizabeth Lovell Thompson and Your Oratrix Maria Thompson by the said Richard Thompson her next friend, that their father William Thompson duly made and published his last will" (bill, image 2, K998). So the testator's son Richard was an adult in the county in 1801, and "Betsey Lovel" was one daughter, Elizabeth Lovell Thompson. (3) The Westmoreland tax lists for 1796 and 1798-1801, read head to foot, carry one Richard Thompson only, always in Washington Parish (K874-K876). (4) On 20 Apr 1804 William Windor Smith and Elizabeth his wife sold Richard Thompson of Westmoreland 160 acres 3 roods 30 perches, part in Washington Parish and part in Hanover Parish, King George, on Capt. Peter Sett's mill road (deed book pp. 23-24, K1002). On 14 Aug 1811 "Richard Thompson and Sally his Wife of the County of Westmoreland" sold the same tract, by the same bounds and acreage, to Jesse Monroe (p. 272, K995). (5) On 4 May 1799 the Washington Parish overseers bound "an orphan child named Thomas Lovel" to Richard Thompson, tailor (p. 72, K997), and Thomas Lovell was a tithable in Richard's household in 1803 (K1000). Lovell is a name carried inside William Thompson's family.
THE IDENTITY. The heir Richard of 1785-1801 and Sally Yeatman's husband are taken to be one man because the county had only one taxable Richard Thompson in 1796-1801; he lived in Washington Parish, the testator's parish; Sally's husband bought and sold Washington Parish land; and the same Richard took in a Lovell orphan. A William Thompson is taxed beside him in 1796, 1799, 1800, 1802 and 1803 and witnessed with him in 1804; he is most likely the testator's son William, Richard's brother, the defendant of the 1801 suit. William Nelson, an executor of the 1785 will and a commissioner of the 1801 sale, offered to stand security for Richard's 1796 marriage bond (bond 96-8, K999).
THE CONFLICTS. (a) A Richard Thompson married Jane Nelson in Westmoreland on 23 Mar 1796 (bond 96-8, K999), two years before the Sally Yeatman marriage of 1798. With one taxable Richard in 1796-1801 the simplest reading is one man, widowed before mid-1798; no record of Jane's death has been found, and no Westmoreland record of 1795-1830 found by full-text search pairs a Richard Thompson with a wife Jane (K1001). (b) The 1796 list counts him a tithable over twenty-one, a year or two before the 1776 birth date of the 1883 sketch allows. (c) The 1797 Washington Parish list was never filmed, and the 1802-1812 lists have not been read head to foot.
THE CONCLUSION. Father: ARGUMENT. What would overturn it: a second adult Richard Thompson in Westmoreland in 1796-1801, or a record placing the 1801 heir Richard somewhere else. Mother: not entered. The will's widow Anne is not shown to be his mother.
AUDITED 28 Sep 2026 - WHERE HE WAS TAXED, 1796-1818: WESTMORELAND UNTIL 1813, FAUQUIER BY 1817. No record read so far names his parents. The county personal property tax lists place him year by year and test whether the Westmoreland taxpayer and this man are one person.
WESTMORELAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA. Personal property tax lists (Library of Virginia originals; FamilySearch DGS 7856354 and 8360228), read on the page images 28 Sep 2026, every T section head to foot. In every year read that names him (1796 and 1798-1801, 1813), the county carries one Richard Thompson and only one, always in Washington Parish (the Upper District). 1796: "Thompson Richard", named as a white male tithable above twenty-one, 1 horse. 1798: "Thompson Richd", 1 slave over 16, 2 horses. 1799: "Thompson Richard", 1 slave over 16, 2 horses. 1800: 1 white male aged 16-21 and 3 slaves over 16 in his household, 2 horses. 1801: 1 white male aged 16-21, 2 slaves over 16, 2 horses. 1813: 4 slaves over 12, 2 horses, a gig valued at $80, tax $3.18. Both parishes were read for 1798, 1799, 1801 and 1815. He is on neither 1815 list and not on the 1816 Washington Parish list. The 1814 Washington Parish page with the T names was never filmed, and 1802-1812 have not been read. Registers K874, K875, K876.
FAUQUIER COUNTY, VIRGINIA. Personal property tax lists 1809-1819 (FamilySearch DGS 7849109), read on the page images 28 Sep 2026. In the 1817 list of Andrew Turner, commissioner, "Thompson Richard" was received 27 May: 1 white male over 16, 2 slaves over 16, no horses, entered next to a William Thompson. Turner's 1818 list has him again: 1 white male over 16, 1 slave over 16, 1 slave aged 12-16. He is not in the county's two other 1817 lists or in the one 1816 list on the film; Turner's own 1815 and 1816 lists are not on it, so his first Fauquier year is unknown. Register K877.
WHAT THIS SHOWS: the Westmoreland taxpayer leaves the rolls between 1813 and 1815, and a Richard Thompson is taxed in Fauquier by May 1817, the spring his son Richard R. Thompson was born at Warrenton (13 Mar 1817, History of Howard and Cooper Counties, 1883, p. 930). That is the move the family accounts describe: Eliza Ann born in Westmoreland in 1806, married at Warrenton in 1829. It is timing, not identity. No list names a wife, a child or a former county, and a Fauquier Richard Thompson of another family has not been ruled out. A Fauquier deed describing him as of Westmoreland would settle it.
