PROOF CLASS: FATHER = DIRECT (Owen, 27 Oct 2026) - Leonard Gunkel: the 1860 deed of John's executors says the land 'descended in fee to Catharine and John Gunkel, children and co-heirs of the said Leonard Gunkel'. Register K1440. AUDITED 27 Oct 2026 (second entry) - FATHER ENTERED: Leonard Gunkel of Cocalico (now Ephrata) Township, who bought 125 acres there in 1776 and died intestate before February 1796. John's mother is NOT established (see the conflicts). The first entry follows this proof summary. THE QUESTION. Who was the father of [3484] John Gunkel of Ephrata Township, Lancaster County, Pa. (will 1849, proved 1856), father of [3412] Rudolph? THE EVIDENCE. (1) A Lancaster deed of 3 Apr 1860 by 'George Gunkel and Rudolph Gunkel, executors of the last will and testament of John Gunkel, late of Ephrata township' (K1440, recitals read on the image): Jacob Martin sold 125 acres to Leonard Gunkel on 19 Mar 1776 (Book S, page 536); 'on the death of the said Leonard Gunkel, the said plantation or tract of land descended in fee to Catharine and John Gunkel, children and co-heirs of the said Leonard Gunkel'; John Markel and 'Catharine Markel late Catharine Gunkel' released their share to John on 16 Feb 1796; John made his last will 'bearing date the 14 day of April A.D. 1849' and 'made his two sons George Gunkel and Rudolph Gunkel his executors'. (2) A Lancaster deed of 1 May 1804, Peter Martin to Jacob Konigmacher (K1450, recital and date read on the image), reciting the same 1776 purchase in Book S page 536: 'the said Leonard Gunkle died Intestate and left Issue namely John Gunkle and one Daughter Catharina Now Wife of John Merkle and a Widow Rosina Now Wife of Abraham Landis'. THE CORRELATION. The 1860 deed (K1440) carries its own identification: the John Gunkel who took Leonard's land is the John whose will is dated 14 Apr 1849 with sons George and Rudolph as executors, and that is the will of [3484] read on the image (K1439). The 1804 deed (K1450) was recorded 56 years earlier, by other parties, and gives the same descent of the same tract (Book S page 536). THE CONFLICTS. (a) Leonard's widow Rosina, by 1796 the wife of Abraham Landis (K1450), is NOT called John's mother, and is not entered as such. (b) John's sister Catharina married John Merkle (Markel) (K1440, K1450). Find a Grave calls John's WIFE 'Catherine Merkle'; that may be a confusion with the sister, and is not entered. (c) The name is spelled Gunkel in 1860 and Gunkle in 1804. THE CONCLUSION. Father: DIRECT, Leonard Gunkel. Mother: open. What would overturn it: evidence that the 1860 recital joined two different John Gunkels; none was seen. AUDITED 27 Oct 2026 - JOHN GUNKEL, of the Township of Ephrata, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His will was signed 14 Apr 1849, with a codicil of 1 May 1852, and proved 27 Aug 1856 (K1439, read on the image), so he died between May 1852 and August 1856. His wife in 1849 was Catharine, who had a life estate in the dwelling house, two cows, firewood and 500 dollars in trust; the will does not say she was the mother of his children. Children named in the will (K1439): George and Aaron, the two elder sons, who had already received a like sum 'from their Grand father'; then the 'five younger children' John, Samuel, William, Rudolph and Hannah. Executors: George and Rudolph. In 1860 the executors sold land to William and Hannah Gunkel; that deed recites a 1776 conveyance of the land to a Leonard Gunkel (K1440, since read on the image). Leonard was John's own father (see above). Whether he is the 'Grand father' the will mentions is not established. Attached as father of [3412] Rudolph (DIRECT); see that note. Wife and other children are not entered.
