AUDITED 3 Nov 2026 - CATHARINE, second wife of John Gunkel [3484] of Ephrata Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN: Find a Grave gives 'Merkle (or Bollinger)'; neither is supported here (Catharina Merkle was John's sister, wife of John Merkle, K1450; David Bollinger's 1819 will names no daughter, K1449), so the surname is left blank. WIFE OF JOHN GUNKEL: his will of 14 Apr 1849 provides for 'my beloved Wife Catharine' (K1439), and FamilySearch's index of the 1850 census lists John Gunkle 78 and Catharine Gunkle 72 in one Ephrata household (K1453, index only), which puts her birth about 1777-78. LIVING 2 FEB 1859: her son Samuel's deed of that day speaks of 'his mother the widow of said John Gunkel deceased who is yet living' (K1626). DEATH: a cemetery burial list quoted on Find a Grave (#199125998) gives 17 Apr 1859, burial Mohler Brethren Church Cemetery, Ephrata (K1628, compiled; the stone was not read), so no death event is entered. MOTHER of [3412] Rudolph by argument - see his note - and, on the 1859 deed, of Samuel. John's will sets his two eldest sons, George and Aaron, apart as having had money 'from their Grand father' (K1439).
