West Chester, 4, 21, 1819; son of Christian Derrick and Maria Rosina Gartenmeyer, of Philadelphia: both buried at Friends' Mtg., West Chester. He was a printer and assisted in the publication of the first newspaper and magazine issued from the press in Chester County (see p. 279). Children,- 2427. Anna M., b. 2, 18, 1800; d. 1, 19, 1865; m. [507] (his own entry is p. 766 no. 2428, register K222); the 1799 marriage is separately record-backed by the Concord MM minutes (Hinshaw vol. 1 p. 860).

Research notes

Working notes from the research, kept verbatim — what was read, what it proved, what stays open. Many open with a line grading the parentage; what the grades mean.

Research note · 29 Sep 2026
AUDITED 5 Aug 2026 - [515] PHILIP DERRICK, first citation of any kind. Gilbert Cope, Genealogy of the Sharpless Family (1887), p. 423, entry 685, states his parentage directly: "m. 4, 18, 1799, in Philadelphia, to Philip Derrick, b. 1772, d. West Chester, 4, 21, 1819; son of Christian Derrick and Maria Rosina Gartenmeyer, of Philadelphia: both buried at Friends' Mtg., West Chester. He was a printer and assisted in the publication of the first newspaper and magazine issued from the press in Chester County." IDENTITY: the entry lists five children - Anna M. (1800), William S. (1802), Louisa (1805), Joseph (1808-09) and A. Hamilton (1810) - matching [517] [507] [518] [519] [520] exactly, in order, with dates. His 21 Apr 1819 death matches the tree to the day. GRADE: STRONG, not PROVEN. Cope 1887 is a compiled genealogy - an informant, not a record. The MARRIAGE is separately record-backed: Hinshaw's Quaker index, Concord Monthly Meeting p. 860, has "7-3-1799 Sarah (form Sharpless) mou" and "11-6-1799 Sarah dis for mou" - two dated meeting minutes bracketing an 18 Apr 1799 marriage out of unity. The PARENTAGE still rests on Cope alone. ⛔ WHAT THIS SOURCE DOES NOT SUPPORT: Cope gives "b. 1772" with NO PLACE and calls the parents "of Philadelphia". The tree's birthplace "Albany, Albany, New York" is NOT supported here and the source leans against it. The field has deliberately NOT been changed - an uncited value is not refuted by a source that is silent. ⛔ PAGE NUMBER: two independent agent readings gave p. 422 and p. 424 for this same image. The printed folio and running head were read directly and both give 423. archive.org's _scandata.xml, _page_numbers.json and its two image endpoints disagree by one on this item. STILL UNCITED after this: his 1772 birth, and everything about Nuenstein. NEXT DOCUMENT (walled): the West Chester Village Record / American Republican, April-May 1819, his own death notice. Chester County has zero newspapers in Chronicling America (control: Philadelphia 8,534, Lancaster 11,752) and none in the free PA Newspaper Archive - GenealogyBank or the Chester County History Center. ⛔ CHESTER COUNTY PROBATE IS A CLOSED, CONTROLLED ZERO: no Philip Derrick in the Wills and Administrations index 1714-1923 or in any of the three Orphans' Court indexes, eight surname variants tested, while the same index returns his father-in-law (Sharpless, William, 1817, 6473, West Chester, Storekeeper). Do not re-run it. 29 Sep 2026 - THE ALBANY BIRTHPLACE STAYS FLAGGED (round-7 triage A9; Owen). The round-7 dossier on [561] reports no Philip Derrick in the Albany Reformed Dutch Church baptisms of 1772-1779 as printed. The field is still not changed: it waits on the family's own Derrick genealogy, Latane Temple Papers 1985:001, Series VIII Folder 16, The History Center, Diboll, which may be where it came from.
