Research note · 10 Aug 2026
AUDITED 10 Aug 2026 — PARENTS: do NOT attach Jane S. Sankey as mother. Find a Grave memorial 45649458 asserts parents John Alexander and Jane S. Sankey. That assignment is internally impossible on the same contributor's own data: John Alexander married Mary Jane Sheller in 1834 (memorial 203612609) and she did not die until 26 Dec 1847, so this man's 3 Aug 1836 birth falls INSIDE that marriage. His brother is Samuel SHELLER Alexander, born 1841 (memorial 86775543), carrying the mother's maiden name as a middle name, which is independent of the dates. Jane S. Sankey (memorial 119775171) is therefore the STEPMOTHER, John's second wife and mother of Hamill (1851) and Elmira Alice (1853). His mother was most likely Mary Jane Sheller (1811-1847), but that is a CORRECTED READING of one contributor's cluster, not a documented fact: the whole cluster derives from a single Lewisburg cemetery transcription of about 1919-24, i.e. ONE INFORMANT, not seven memorials. "John Alexander as father" is UNSUPPORTABLE on the free web. Linn, Annals of Buffalo Valley (1877), Ellis and Everts (1886), and the Bucknell alumni catalogue 1851-1910 are all controlled negatives; none places him in a named household. SETTLES IT: Pennsylvania death certificate no. 51293, Samuel Sheller Alexander, died 25 May 1909 at Philadelphia — Pennsylvania certificates name the mother's maiden name. His own birth, death and burial facts remain LIKELY, not confirmed: no primary image has been seen for any of them, and the 1911 Garnett obituary is NOT in Chronicling America.
