Household as the Ancestry name index gives it (record 6742/records/5417197), house no. 436, dwelling 563: Hellen Edward 46 Self (Head) J. C. Edward 16 Son William Crouch 23 Son-in-law Harriet Crouch 19 Daughter Also indexed on the record: Harriet under the alternate "[Harriet Edward]"; "Mother's Name Hellen Edward, Mother's Birthplace Illinois"; "Father's Birthplace Arkansas". WHY THE HEAD IS [121] HELLEN MAR CULLY, on three independent agreements in the record itself: age 46 implies b. abt 1834 against her tree value of 1833; birthplace Illinois matches her tree value; and she is named as Harriet's mother, Harriet being [109], her daughter in F79. The record's "Father's Birthplace Arkansas" independently fits her husband [120] Thomas Jefferson Edwards, b. 1826 Hempstead Co., Arkansas, who died in 1877 - which is why she heads the household as a widow. ⛔ PROVENANCE CEILING, AND IT GOVERNS HOW THIS MAY BE USED: this was read on the ANCESTRY NAME INDEX, not on the census image. This project has logged FIVE index initial-errors, every one of them in the tree's favour, which is exactly why the index is seductive. The citation is honest for the HOUSEHOLD STRUCTURE and for the citation string; the ages and the initials want the image before they become facts. The image sits in the same enumeration district and is a cheap upgrade. ☞ A LEAD, GRADED AND NOT ATTACHED: "J. C. Edward, 16, Son" is very likely [1246] John Culley Edwards - the initials match the Culley/Cully middle name exactly. STRONG, not proven, and NOT attached, because initials alone are precisely what the five logged index errors were made of.

Research note · 5 Aug 2026
AUDITED 5 Aug 2026 - [121] HELLEN MAR CULLY: her household is identified, and a standing question in the branch memo is closed.crouch-branch-research.md section 4 item 2 asked who headed the 1880 Texarkana household in which [109] Harriet appears as "Daughter" and her husband [108] W. B. Crouch as "Son-in-law", and recorded that "the head of that household is not identified anywhere in the database." It is this person. 1880 U.S. census, Texarkana, Miller Co., Arkansas, Roll 51, p. 112C, ED 194: "Hellen Edward, 46, Self (Head)", with "J. C. Edward 16 Son", "William Crouch 23 Son-in-law" and "Harriet Crouch 19 Daughter", and the record naming "Mother's Name Hellen Edward, Mother's Birthplace Illinois". She heads it as the widow of [120] Thomas Jefferson Edwards, who died in 1877.⛔ READ ON THE INDEX, NOT THE IMAGE - see the citation text for why that limit matters here.⛔ HER OWN PARENTS ARE STILL NOT IN THE TREE, AND WERE DELIBERATELY NOT ADDED. A 1961 compiled family history (Talbot Feild, Texarkana Pioneer Family Histories) names them as Dr. Lewis Thomas Culley and Harriet Davis Hill, married 17 Aug 1830 at Dayton, Ohio - but every element of that claim traces to that one compilation, which was shown on 5 Aug 2026 to err three times in the same paragraph when checked against the Old Rondo Cemetery gravestones. Worse, the book gives her birth as 1 Apr 1832 while her own stone reads April 1833 and her brother Edwin Ruthven Culley is also 1833; the tree's 1833 therefore sides with the stone against the book. The parentage is a lead, not a finding.◎ NAMED NEXT DOCUMENT, and it would settle parentage and the 1832/1833 split together: the 1850 U.S. census for Lafayette County, Arkansas - Rondo was in Lafayette until Miller County was re-created in 1874 - where she would appear aged about 17 in Dr. Culley's household.
