Research notes

Working notes from the research, kept verbatim — what was read, what it proved, what stays open. Many open with a line grading the parentage; what the grades mean.

Research note · 7 Sep 2026
PROOF CLASS: FATHER = DIRECT (7 Sep 2026) - his own 1932 Arkansas death certificate, Miller Co. cert 554, item 13, STATES 'T. J. Edwards'. Read on the image. Register K489. PROOF CLASS: MOTHER = DIRECT (7 Sep 2026) - the 1880 Texarkana census, read on the image, states him 'J. C., 16, Son' of the head Hellen Edward, a WIDOW - so 'Son' states maternity. Register K479. AUDITED 7 Sep 2026 - FIRST AUDIT ON THIS PERSON. Both halves close on records this project ALREADY HELD and neither was attached to him: he carried ZERO citations, no Audited note, and ProofFather/ProofMother 0/0. RECORD 1 - HIS OWN DEATH CERTIFICATE, READ ON THE IMAGE (K489, citation 862, media 61777_01_00107-01619.jpg). Arkansas State Board of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics, Certificate of Death no. 554; Miller Co., Garland twp., Texarkana, 947 Pecan St; Registration District 410, Primary Registration District 2338; filed 6 Feb 1932. * item 2 FULL NAME 'John C. Edwards' * 3 male * 4 white * 5 widowed * 6 DATE OF BIRTH 'Feb 20 1864' * 7 age 68 * 12 BIRTHPLACE 'Arkansas' * ITEM 13 FATHER'S NAME: 'T. J. Edwards' * 14 his birthplace 'Tenn' * ITEM 15 MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME: 'Culley' * 16 her birthplace 'Tenn' * 17 informant Mrs. Roy Booth, Texarkana, Ark. * 18 buried 5 Feb 1932 * 19 undertaker East Funeral Home, Texarkana * 20 filed 6 Feb 1932 * 21 DATE OF DEATH 'Feb 4 1932' * 22 attended from 12 Nov 1931 to 4 Feb 1932, last seen alive 3 Feb, died at 2 a.m.; cause cardio-vascular nephritis, contributory cystitis; signed H. R. Webster, M.D., Texarkana. RECORD 2 - THE 1880 CENSUS, READ ON THE IMAGE (K479; cited as citation 7057 on [121]). 1880 U.S. census, Texarkana, Miller Co., Ark., ED 194, page 112C, dwelling 563 family 437: Edward, Hellen - W F 46 - [head; relationship cell blank] - WIDOWED - keeping house - b. Ill.; J. C. - W M 16 - SON - RR Clerk - b. Arks - mother Ill.; Crouch, William - W M 23 - Son-Law; Harriet - W F 19 - Daughter - b. Arks - mother Ill. WHY BOTH HALVES ARE DIRECT AND NOT ARGUMENT (proof-standard 2c, shape A - a record STATES the relationship). * FATHER: item 13 of his own death certificate names his father outright; nothing has to be correlated to get from the record to the claim. * MOTHER: the 1880 return states him SON of the head, and the head is a WIDOW - so 'Son' states MATERNITY, not merely a relation to a wife's husband. That is the identical reading Owen accepted for his sister [109] on 6 Sep 2026, from the same page and the same line of argument. IDENTIFICATION, AND NONE OF IT RESTS ON THE LINK BEING PROVED. * The certificate's date of birth 'Feb 20 1864' is [1246]'s recorded birth to the day, and 'Feb 4 1932' his recorded death to the day; he died at Texarkana, Miller Co., where the tree already places him. * THE OTHER JOHN IN THIS SIBSHIP IS EXCLUDED ON THE RECORD: [1252] John Lewis Edwards was born 1857 and DIED 8 AUG 1875 - five years before the 1880 enumeration and fifty-seven before this certificate, so he can be neither man. [1251] Emma (b. 1855) is female, and [109] Harriet is the Daughter in the same dwelling. * 'J. C., 16' in June 1880 implies birth about 1863-64; [1246], born Feb 1864, was 16 years 4 months. * The middle initial C. agrees with the tree's 'John Culley', his mother's maiden surname carried as a middle name - and item 15 'Culley' is what settles the initials question K479 deliberately left open ('do not attach on initials alone', five index initial-errors logged). * MINOR SLIP RECORDED, NOT SMOOTHED: item 7 gives his age as 68 when the certificate's own item 6 makes him 67 years 11 months at death. He would have turned 68 sixteen days later. CONFLICT, NAMED AND RESOLVED - THE CERTIFICATE'S PARENTAL BIRTHPLACES ARE WORTHLESS AND ITS NAME FIELDS ARE NOT. Items 14 and 16 BOTH read 'Tenn', and both are wrong against the tree: [120] Thomas Jefferson Edwards was born 30 Sep 1826 in Hempstead Co., ARKANSAS, and [121] Hellen Mar Cully about 1833 in ILLINOIS. THE INFORMANT WROTE ONE STATE TWICE - the same failure recorded on [108]'s 1880 sheet, where one informant gave Pennsylvania three times (K474). The 1880 census settles it from HIS OWN LINE: the mother's-birthplace column reads 'Ill.', taken while she was living and in the household, six years before her death in 1886. The birthplace columns do not bear on this question; the name fields do. WHY THE 1880 HEAD IS [121] HELLEN MAR CULLY (K479): age 46 implies b. abt 1834 against her tree value of abt 1833; born Illinois matches; she is enumerated WIDOWED and [120] died 29 Jul 1877; and she is named as Harriet's mother on the same page. WHAT WOULD OVERTURN IT: a record naming a different father for a John C. Edwards born 20 Feb 1864 in Arkansas who died at Texarkana on 4 Feb 1932; or evidence that the 'J. C., 16, Son' of the 1880 Texarkana household is a different man, which would require a second John born about 1864 to this widow. Neither is known. PROVENANCE, AND THE PROCESS FINDING. The certificate has been on local disk since 24 Jul 2026, carried by citation 862, which is attached to [120] BECAUSE IT NAMES HIM AS FATHER. It was correct there and INCOMPLETE - the decedent himself had nothing. See K490: 4,082 of this tree's 6,743 untranscribed citations (60.5%) have their image already on disk. DELIBERATELY NOT DONE HERE, so that the next reader does not mistake absence for oversight. (a) The 1880 census citation 7057 is NOT linked to him - he carries no Residence fact to hang it on, and creating one is a separate write. (b) Citation 862 is linked to his DEATH event only, not also to his Birth, so that the TreeShare delta measures ONE citation landing on ONE new carrier and the number means something. (c) Citation 7057's stored text is still the Ancestry NAME-INDEX read and carries its own provenance ceiling; the image read that this grade rests on is K479, not that citation's text.
