"Arkansas Territory / Hempstead county ss - I certify that I did on the 22nd day of September 1825 Join together in a holy State of matrimony according to law, Meriditth W Edwards and Patsy H Props. - John Henry, An ordained minister of the gospel. - Recorded 23rd November 1825. A. M. Oakley Clk" (read on the page image by Owen Temple, 6 Aug 2026; image saved at sources/hempstead-1825-edwards-props-marriage/hempstead-AR-marriage-book-p142-143-EDWARDS-PROPS-22SEP1825-2026-08-06.jpg). ★ SETTLES A DISPUTED DATE. Two published abstracts disagreed: the 1961 Feild compilation of Texarkana pioneer family histories gave 22 September 1825, and the USGenWeb Hempstead County courthouse abstract gave 22 MAY 1825. The original register reads SEPTEMBER, so Feild is correct here and the USGenWeb abstract is a transcription error. ⛔ This vindicates Feild on THIS point only - Feild errs three times in one paragraph against the Rondo gravestones on the Culley parentage, and that remains rejected. ★ The register also corroborates both middle names independently: "Patsy H Props" supports HARPOLE, and "Meriditth W Edwards" supports WALTON. ⛔ CITATION DISCREPANCY, recorded and NOT reconciled: clerk Ray E. McDowell's certificate of 24 Nov 1937 cites this record as "Deeds and Marriage Book 'A' at Page 150." The entry was READ at BOOK PAGE 142. Cause unverified - possibly this volume's second pagination, possibly a slip in the 1937 certificate. Cite page 142, which is what was read.

PROOF CLASS: FATHER = DIRECT (Owen, 10 Oct 2026) - the Sevier Co., Ark. probate of Daniel Props names "the said Martha, daughter of said deceased", wife of Meredith W Edwards. Register K970. AUDITED 10 Oct 2026 - FATHER ENTERED: Daniel Props, who died intestate in Sevier County, Arkansas, on or about 1 April 1858. His estate was settled in the Sevier County probate court, and the court named her as his daughter. Her mother is NOT entered: no record read so far names Daniel's wife. THE QUESTION. Who was the father of [1248] 'Patsy' Martha Harpole Props, wife of [1247] Meredith Walton Edwards? THE EVIDENCE. (1) The Sevier County, Arkansas, probate record of the estate of Daniel Props, vol. 8-9, p. 53, settlement filed 9 May 186[1] (read on the image 10 Oct 2026, register K970). The heirs are named as defendants, including "Meredith W Edwards and Martha Edwards his wife". The court finds that "the said Daniel Props in his life time, advanced to the said Meredith W Edwards, who was at that time the husband of the said Martha, daughter of said deceased the sum of five hundred and fifty five ($555) Dollars as an advance to his said daughter". In the distribution, "Meredith W Edwards & Martha his wife" take a full share of $816.73, the same as John H. Props, Lewis C. Props and James M. Coulter & Brunetta his wife. (2) The Hempstead County deed of Lewis C. Props as administrator, Book Q, pp. 164-165, recorded 1860 (K971). On the image it says Daniel Props "departed this life in said County of Sevier on or about the 1st day of April AD 1858 intestate, leaving no widow him surviving". (3) Her marriage: Hempstead County marriage register, "Meriditth W Edwards and Patsy H Props", 22 Sep 1825 (already cited on her, cit 7068). THE IDENTITY. The Martha of the probate is this Patsy. Patsy is the usual pet form of Martha, and her 1825 marriage puts a Patsy H. Props with a Meredith W. Edwards in Hempstead County. The probate's Martha is the wife of a Meredith W. Edwards, and the 1860 deed lists the same couple among Daniel's heirs. No second Meredith W. Edwards married to a Martha has been found in these counties. THE CONFLICTS. (a) The tree's earlier source for her parents, Talbot Feild in Texarkana Pioneer Family Histories (1961), gives Daniel Props's death as 1852. The court records give about 1 April 1858, in Sevier County, and 1858 is carried. (b) A 13 Jul 1849 Nashville Christian Advocate obituary of Brunetta W. Kinsworthy calls her the daughter of "David and Sarah Props" (register K773). Both 1858-1861 court records say Daniel. (c) Feild names the mother as Sarah (Sally) Rachael Harpole. The 1858 estate left "no widow", which conflicts with the 1860 death date tree-lore gives Sarah, and neither court record names a wife, so no mother is entered. THE CONCLUSION. Father: DIRECT. A court record states the relationship: Martha, wife of Meredith W. Edwards, is "daughter of said deceased" Daniel Props. What would overturn it: a second Martha Edwards, wife of a Meredith W. Edwards, in the Hempstead-Sevier corridor. Mother: open. The next document for her is a Wilson or Smith County, Tennessee, record of Daniel Props's marriage, or a Hempstead record naming his wife.
