"Know all men by these presents that whereas John Jones Snr late of the County of Casey in the State of Kentucky departed this life in or about the year 1835 leaving amongst others the following named persons as children and heirs to wit Samuel C Jones now deceased and Mary Ann Carpenter (late Mary Ann Jones) who is now wife of Adam Carpenter and also seized possessed or entitled to a large estate, Real, personal & mixed Now therefore Know ye that we the said Adam Carpenter & Mary Ann Carpenter his wife of the County of Johnson in the State of Missouri have made nominated constituted and appointed, and by these presents do make nominate constitute and appoint John S Jones of said County of Johnson our true and lawful attorney" - to take possession of and sell their real estate in Casey County, a slave then in Casey County, and collect their debts there. Opens "I John Jones Sen'r of the County of Casey & State of Kentucky". 2ndly his "well beloved wife" (not named) to hold the estate while his widow. 3rdly: "That all the Children that are not grown (Towit) Bersheba, Melissa, Samuel Coleman, & Matelda Johnson, be taught to Read and Wright also the arithmatic & English Grammar". The boys to have one hundred dollars more than the girls. 6thly: "the Articles of agreement between my self and my three son-in-laws John Jones, Charles A Bailey & Chesley Jones" (first signed 11 Oct 1826), governing property given to "any of those who may yet marry with any of my daughters"; John Spilman to have the place he now possesses. 8thly: Ben, his wife Charity and their son Thomas to be freed on condition they go to Liberia. 10thly: wife and sons of lawful age executrix and executors. Signed "John Jones Sr" 19 July 1833; witnesses Isaiah Clifton, Rich'd L. Smith, Geo. W. Smith. PROOF CLASS: BOTH PARENTS = DIRECT - 27 Sep 2026, two recorded Casey Co. deeds: her mother calls her 'the daughter of said Ann C Jones' (K842, 1845); her own 1856 power of attorney names her a child and heir of John Jones Snr (K843). Audited 31 Jul 2026 — her first, and her first citation. She appears as 'Mary A Carpenter, 32' in the 1850 census of District 2, Casey Co., Kentucky — b. c.1818, matching her recorded 1818 exactly, in the county the tree gives as her birthplace. (She had no parents in this tree until 27 Sep 2026 - see the head of this note.) ⭐⭐ THE GENERATION'S HEADLINE, from the seven households read together: NOT ONE OF THESE FAMILIES WAS STILL A KENTUCKY FAMILY BY 1860, and the children's birthplace column dates each departure. CARPENTER x POWELL were in SMITH CO., TENNESSEE by 1850 (left KY c. 1845-49). CAVINS x MANSFIELD were in RANDOLPH CO., MISSOURI by 1850 (left KY by 1844). AUDITED 27 Sep 2026 (evening) - HER PARENTS ARE JOHN JONES SR. (d. Casey Co. c.1835) AND ANN C. JONES. Register K841, K842, K843. MOTHER. On 20 Oct 1845 "Ann C Jones Executrix of John Jones Dec'd" deeded land to "Adam Carpenter & Mary Ann his wife", "in consideration of the said Adam Carpenters having married with the daughter of said Ann C Jones ... as a part of that legacy in and to said Deceased estate which may come to them as a legatee" (Casey Deeds 1824-1851, p. 136; K842). The grantor is her mother, stating the relationship herself. FATHER. On 30 Oct 1856 Adam Carpenter and Mary Ann Carpenter "of the County of Johnson in the State of Missouri" gave John S. Jones power to sell their Casey County property, reciting that "John Jones Snr late of the County of Casey ... departed this life in or about the year 1835 leaving amongst others the following named persons as children and heirs to wit Samuel C Jones now deceased and Mary Ann Carpenter (late Mary Ann Jones) who is now wife of Adam Carpenter" (Casey Deeds 1849-1863, p. 122, recorded 26 Jan 1857; K843). She signed it herself. IDENTITY. The John Jones Snr of K843 is the testator of the will in K839: that will was proved at the September 1835 Casey County Court with probate granted to Ann C Jones among others (K839), matching both his death date in K843 and her office as executrix in K842; his minor son Samuel Coleman in the will is the Samuel C Jones of K843; and Adam and Mary Ann of Johnson Co., Missouri are this couple, who moved there and where she died in 1897. WHAT THIS REPLACES. A paragraph written the same morning read her absence from the will's list of children 'not grown' as weighing against his being her father. That clause (3rdly) names the children still to be taught to read and write 'or at least to be as well educated as the others are' - it is not a list of heirs, and K843 settles the question. The alternative it raised, a brother William Jones (d. 1833), is moot; Casey Will Book 1, 1830-1837, holds no estate paper for a William Jones in any case (K841). NOT PROVED. Her mother's maiden name. 'Coleman' is suggested only by her brother Samuel Coleman Jones's middle name and by Mary Ann's own daughter Nancy Coleman Carpenter; no record here states it. Also recorded, not relied on: in the 1830 census of Casey Co., read on the image for every indexed Jones head, John Jones's household (p. 289) holds a girl 10-15 (K838).
