Oct 1820 Georgia, were created in RootsMagic on 19 Sep 2026 and she is attached to them as their daughter. Their own notes carry their evidence. ⛔ No marriage event was written for them: the Fayette County, Georgia return of 13 Apr 1835 for Syrus H. Carter and Martha Yates is held only as a TEXT-ONLY ABSTRACT with no image, and a dated fact off an unread record is an inference wearing a date. ⛔ No death event was written for either of them. THE MOTHER HALF IS DIRECT - A RECORD STATES IT. The 1900 U.S. census of Justice Precinct 1, Travis County, Texas (ED 0108, sheet 8, dwelling 127 family 134; register K504, read on the image) enters 'Carter, Martha' on line 21 with the relationship to head 'MOTHER IN LAW', born Oct 1820 Georgia, widowed. The head is John Morgan and the wife on line 16 is this person. A mother-in-law of the head, in a household whose wife she is, is her mother. That is shape A under proof-standard.md §2c - a record that STATES the relationship, not one that correlates columns. The 1880 census of Travis County, ED 121 sheet 10D (register K739) independently states the same woman is MOTHER of J. M. Carter, 38, b. Georgia, so one woman is the stated mother of both the son born about 1842 and this daughter. THE FATHER HALF IS AN ARGUMENT, AND NO RECORD STATES IT. Her 1937 death certificate gives her father's SURNAME only, 'Carter', and 'Don't Know' for his birthplace (register K503), so the link is built rather than read. The chain: the 1850 census of Pontotoc County, Mississippi puts Cyrus H Carter, 38, b. Georgia, with a wife Martha and five children (K733); the 1860 census of Center Township, Sebastian County, Arkansas puts Harrison Carter, 48, b. Georgia, unable to read or write, next door to a household of his older children in which CORNELIA, 7, b. ARKANSAS is enumerated (K734); he registered to vote in Travis County, Texas in July 1867 as 'Cyrus X his mark Carter'; and the 1870 census of Travis County finds her, aged 18 and born Arkansas, married to John Morgan and sharing a dwelling with Carter, Eli Thomas, 29, b. Georgia - the eldest son of that same household (K737). Her own 1880 line then gives FATHER BORN GEORGIA and MOTHER BORN GEORGIA (K740), which fits Cyrus b. Georgia and Martha b. Georgia. ⛔ Every joint here is an identification from agreeing columns; none is a stated relationship. ARGUMENT, not DIRECT, and the grade says so. THE BIRTH FACT, AND ALL THREE VALUES IT HAS CARRIED. (1) It read 25 Apr 1853, ARKANSAS until 7 Sep 2026. (2) On 7 Sep 2026 it was moved to 25 Apr 1848, MISSISSIPPI, off her 1937 death certificate. (3) On 19 Sep 2026 it reads ABOUT 1853, ARKANSAS. ⛔ WHY IT IS YEAR-LEVEL AND CARRIES NO MONTH. The 7 Sep paragraph further down this note is RIGHT that '25 Apr 1853' was a splice - day and month off the certificate, year and place off an 1880 census AGE column, with neither cited record stating the whole. A value of 'Apr 1853' would be the same splice one component shorter, so it was rejected. ARKANSAS AND THE YEAR rest on THREE independent enumerations OF HER OWN PERSON: age 7 b. Ark in 1860 (K734), age 18 b. Arkansas in 1870 (K737), age 27 b. Arkansas in 1880 (K740). ☞ APRIL IS REAL AND IS RECORDED HERE RATHER THAN IN THE FACT: the 1900 census birth-month column gives Apr and the 1937 certificate gives 25 April - two different informants, 37 years apart - but they give 1856 and 1848 for the year, so the month cannot be welded to a year neither of them states. ⛔ THE CONFLICT IS RECORDED, NOT SMOOTHED. Mississippi is given by the 1900 census (her own birthplace column, and the mother's-birthplace column of all four sons) and by the 1937 certificate. Arkansas is given by the 1860, 1870 and 1880 enumerations. The three Arkansas records are the earlier ones, taken while her parents were living and in the household, and they agree with the family's own movements - the 1850 census has them in Mississippi and a daughter Rebecca born there about 1845, while three children including her are born in Arkansas by 1860. That is why Arkansas is preferred. It is a judgement between records, not a reading of one. ⛔ WHAT IS STILL NOT WRITTEN, AND WHY. The maiden name YATES is NOT a fact on her mother - it is prose in her mother's note until the 1835 Fayette County return is read on an image (K727 settled the SPELLING from two indexes; the image alone is ambiguous). Neither parent has a death event. And the 1860 census wife's age of 31, re-calibrated on the image twice (K734 against a 5, K742 against a 4 - the digit is a 3), still means a woman born about 1829 cannot be the mother of a son born about 1842; either that age is an enumerator's error or the 1860 wife is a second wife. That is unresolved and does not bear on the mother link, which rests on the 1880 and 1900 statements. ⛔ HAZARD FOR WHOEVER PUSHES THIS. Her Ancestry page carries unlinked hints 'Cyrus Siras Harrison Carter - Potential father' and 'Martha Yates - Potential mother'. DO NOT ACCEPT THEM. The RootsMagic-created pair is the only pair; accepting a hint as well gives the published tree two parent pairs. The hint's 'Martha Yates' is an other-trees guess, not evidence. --- CORRECTED 18 Sep 2026: her mother's maiden name is YATES, not Gates. The 7 Sep 2026 reading of field 15 of her 1937 death certificate below was a mis-transcription. Ancestry and FamilySearch both index Yates; the image alone is ambiguous. Register K727. A Yates household next door, on the same Georgia-Alabama-Mississippi trail as the Carters, is what a Carter-Yates marriage in Georgia predicts; it is adjacency, not a stated relationship. Ark. THE AGE ON LINE 2 READS 31, NOT 51: the first digit matches the 3 of '23' on line 3 and of 'Susan 3' on line 9, and the page's 5s (500, 50) have a flat top this digit lacks. The 27 Jul 2026 reading stands. A woman of 31 in 1860 was born about 1829 and is not the Martha aged 36 in 1850 unless one census is fifteen years wrong. THE 1860 SCHEDULE HAS NO RELATIONSHIP COLUMN. WHAT THIS SETTLES AND WHAT IT DOES NOT. Cyrus H. Carter of Pontotoc in 1850 (38) and Harrison Carter of Sebastian County in 1860 (48) are the same age to the year, both born Georgia, and both households carry a Joseph and a Martha at consistent ages; the 1867 Travis County voter register (TSLAC reel 3570, lines 744-746, read by the 27 Jul 2026 agent) puts 'Cyrus H. Carter' beside 'Eli T.' and 'Joseph M.' Carter, the two sons of the 1850 household, so the Pontotoc man is the Travis County man. The 1860 household holds TWO daughters who could be this person: 'Martha' 12, born about 1848 in GEORGIA (also 'Martha' 2, Georgia, in 1850), and 'Cornelia' 7, born about 1853 in ARKANSAS. Her 1937 death certificate (registers K503, K727) says born 25 Apr 1848 in Mississippi, a year that fits the first and a name that fits the second, and NOBODY in either household is 1848 plus Mississippi; the 1880 census (register K499) gives 27 and Arkansas, which fits Cornelia exactly, as does the 1867 marriage as 'Nealy'. Which daughter she is, and whether the Martha of 1860 is the Martha Yates married in Fayette County, Georgia in 1835 or a second wife of the same name, are the two open questions; they are put to Owen in the proof summary rather than decided here. No parent has been created, no link made, and the birth fact was not changed a third time. RECORDED NEGATIVE (register K735), so nobody re-chases it: Ancestry's suggested records for this man, the 1870 U.S. Census of Gwinnett County, Georgia (collection 7163 record 5051883, Cyrus Carter 40 with Caroline) and the 1880 U.S. Census of Goodwins, Gwinnett County (collection 6742 record 7793132, 'Cyrus Cartel' 52, wife Caroline, father b. South Carolina, mother b. Virginia), are the Cyrus Carter who married Caroline Jackson in Gwinnett County in 1850, a different man; ours was in Pontotoc, Mississippi, that November and in Travis County, Texas, by 1867. Their parents' birthplaces are not his. ⛔ SUPERSEDED THE SAME DAY, 19 Sep 2026. This paragraph proposed browsing the 1870 Travis County census by enumeration district. THE BROWSE WAS NEVER RUN AND WAS NOT NEEDED: a GIVEN-NAME-ONLY index sweep found the household on the first pass (register K737). Ancestry indexes her 'Corndia' and her brother 'Cartee, Elsi Thomas', which is what defeated six earlier surname searches. And the answer is not the one this paragraph expected - she is in NO Carter parental household in 1870, because she married in Dec 1867 and heads her own family with John Morgan and a one-year-old son. That was the pre-declared check that could have gone red, and it went green. See the 19 Sep section at the head of this note. Audited 18 Sep 2026 - a one-word transcription error found and corrected. Register K727. WHAT WAS WRONG. The 7 Sep 2026 section below recorded field 15 of the 1937 Texas death certificate, the mother's maiden name, as 'Gates'. It reads YATES. The same certificate had been read once before, on 27 Jul 2026, and that earlier reading had it right. Neither reading saved a crop of the field, so the two never met, and the 7 Sep note contradicted a standing memo on the single most load-bearing word in this branch without saying that it did. HOW IT WAS SETTLED, AND NOT BY THE HANDWRITING. The image was re-opened 18 Sep 2026 at the documented browse path - Ancestry collection 2272, image 40394_b062135-00265, Travis 1937 Jul-Sep, image 265 of 292 - and read at maximum magnification. The letterform on its own does not decide it: the initial is a capital with a closed oval bowl and a descender loop, which in this hand fits a looped capital Y and a capital G about equally, and the registrar's own 'G 378' at the head of the form is a print-style letter in a different hand and is not a usable control. What decided it was two transcriptions made outside this project. Ancestry's index of collection 2272, record 22243681, gives father Carter, mother Yates, spouse John Morgan. FamilySearch's index of Texas Deaths 1890-1977, ark 61903/1:1:K3HP-X31, gives parent Carter and parent Yates. THE TWO INDEXES ARE NOT COPIES OF EACH OTHER, AND THAT WAS TESTED RATHER THAN ASSUMED. On this same 1937 certificate Ancestry indexes the birthplace as Missouri and FamilySearch indexes it as Mississippi, where the image reads 'Miss.'. Two indexes that differ on one field of a certificate and agree on another are agreeing independently, and each is thereby shown to be fallible, so neither was taken on authority. WHAT TURNS ON THE SPELLING, BEYOND THE SPELLING. A candidate couple for this person's parents rests entirely on this surname: the marriage of Syrus H. Carter to Martha Yates, 13 Apr 1835, Fayette County, Georgia. That surname was written down as a prediction from field 15 before the 1835 marriage was found, which is what makes the marriage a test of the prediction rather than a coincidence; on 'Gates' the prediction simply fails and the candidate couple has no anchor. NOTHING HAS BEEN WRITTEN FROM ANY OF IT. No person has been created for the mother and no parent link has been made. The chain running from the 1835 Georgia marriage through the 1850 Pontotoc Mississippi household, the 1860 Sebastian County Arkansas household and the 1867 Travis County voter roll still joins at name and birthplace, not at documented identity, and whether to build on it is a decision for Owen. Five images are filed at ancestry/sources/carter-348-deathcert-field15-2026-09-18/, including the rejected 'G 378' control, so this does not have to be argued from the image a third time. --- ⛔ SUPERSEDED 19 Sep 2026 - the birth fact now reads ABOUT 1853, ARKANSAS. This 7 Sep paragraph is KEPT because its reasoning still stands and is the reason the new value is year-level: it said the old '25 Apr 1853' was a splice, day and month off that certificate, year and place off an 1880 census AGE column, with neither cited record stating it. What it got wrong was the remedy - it moved the fact onto the certificate's 25 Apr 1848, MISSISSIPPI, against three enumerations of her own person. See the head of this note. AUDITED 4 Aug 2026 - A FOURTH NAME FORM FROM A RECORD: her son Will Morgan's 1919 death certificate (L1, read on the image) gives 'MAIDEN NAME OF MOTHER: Martha Carter', born TEXAS - the surname CARTER corroborated, but the forename Martha matches none of this person's three recorded names, and Texas conflicts with the Arkansas birth. One informant (the informant line reads '[J.?] T. Morgan', probably her husband). Recorded, not resolved - bears on the Junction #9 which-wife question (interleaved wives, Physinthia/Cornelia fusion). --- Audited 7 Sep 2026 - two records read, one fabricated fact removed, and her mother named for the first time. The stated age of 89 years 4 months 10 days counted back from 3 Sep 1937 reaches 23 April 1848, within two days of the stated 25 Apr 1848, so the certificate is internally consistent on the year 1848. WHY THE BIRTH FACT WAS CORRECTED. E1693 read '25 Apr 1853, Arkansas' and carried exactly two citations: cit 3112, the 1880 U.S. Census of Travis Co. (coll. 6742 rec. 7301735, image 4244801-00028), and cit 6915, the certificate above. NEITHER OF THEM STATES THAT DATE OR THAT PLACE. A census records an AGE, never a birth date, and the 1880 line gives 'wife, 27, b. Ark'; the certificate gives 25 Apr 1848 and Mississippi. The recorded fact was a composite - day and month taken from the certificate, year and place taken from the census - presented as one fact with both records cited beneath it. A CITATION LIST IS NOT A DERIVATION: two citations under one fact can each support a different half of it and neither support the whole. MISSISSIPPI IS CORROBORATED BY THE 1900 CENSUS BELOW AND BY A DIFFERENT INFORMANT. Her own birthplace column there reads Mississippi, and so does the mother's-birthplace column on each of the four sons enumerated with her. Arkansas now rests on the single 1880 line, which the 1900 census and the 1937 certificate both contradict. RECORDED NEGATIVE, so nobody re-hunts it: this certificate does NOT give her father's forename. Field 13 carries the surname 'Carter' alone. Under proof-standard.md section 2c a record that names a parent's SURNAME is not a record that names the parent. HER MOTHER IS NAMED, AND THE RECORD STATES THE RELATIONSHIP. 1900 U.S. Census, Justice Precinct 1, Travis Co., Texas, ED 0108, sheet 8, dwelling 127 family 134, roll 1673, image 4118572_00614, read on the image 7 Sep 2026 in ONE FRAME spanning the printed column headers through Mother's Birthplace. Line 21 of that page reads 'Carter, Martha', relation to head 'M in law', white female, born Oct 1820, aged 80, Widowed, 6 children born and 3 living, birthplace Georgia, father Georgia, mother Georgia. Mother-in-law of the head, in a household whose wife is this person, states that Martha Carter is this person's mother. Set beside field 15 of the 1937 certificate above, she is MARTHA (YATES) CARTER, born Oct 1820 in Georgia. NO PERSON HAS BEEN CREATED FOR HER AND NO LINK HAS BEEN MADE; that is a separate decision, and these are ring-5 collaterals. THIS ALSO ANSWERS THE 'MARTHA' PUZZLE RECORDED IN THE 4 AUG 2026 SECTION ABOVE. That section reports her son Will Morgan's 1919 death certificate giving 'MAIDEN NAME OF MOTHER: Martha Carter' and observes that the forename Martha matches none of this person's three recorded names. It matches his GRANDMOTHER's. The 1919 informant gave the right surname and the wrong generation. A name that fits nobody in the tree may fit somebody in the household. HER OWN LINE IN THAT 1900 CENSUS, line 16: 'Cynthia C.', Wife, white female, born Apr 1856, aged 44, married 31 years, 6 children born and 5 living, birthplace Mississippi, father's birthplace Georgia, mother's birthplace Georgia. The head, line 15, is 'Morgan, John', born Jan 1853, aged 47, married 31 years, birthplace South Carolina. AGES REMAIN SOFT AND ARE NOT SMOOTHED HERE. She is 27 in the 1880 census, 44 in the 1900 census and 89 at death in 1937, implying 1853, 1856 and 1848. Only the certificate states a date rather than an age, and only the certificate is internally checkable against its own age field, which is why 1848 was taken. The same spread affects her husband; his own note records that it must be resolved as ONE question and not person by person.
