His own PCC will, PROB 11/450/343, fos. 311-312, is now held as the ORIGINAL REGISTER IMAGE (TNA Discovery, free, order 3604631; local copy ancestry/sources/joseph-temple-bristol-1699-will-PROB-11-450-343.pdf) and has been read twice: on 22 Jul from an Ancestry image (40611_310634-00097) and on 31 Jul from the TNA register image at 6-12x. THE TWO READINGS DISAGREED ON FOUR POINTS AND ALL FOUR ARE NOW DECIDED FROM THE IMAGE: the brother-in-law and executor is Edward PEIRCE, not Pruit; the uncle is Robert LISTON, not Easton; the witness is Sarah SWETNAM, not Freeman; and probate was 16 MAY 1699, not 26 May - the Latin reads "Decimo sexto die mensis Maij" and TNA's catalogue agrees. The phrase "sicke and weake of body" attributed to this will on 31 Jul is NOT in it; the opening clause reads "being fully sensible of the declineing condition of my body but being (blessed be God) of sound and disposing mind and memory." CONFIRMED FROM THE WILL: mercer of the City of Bristol; will dated 31 Mar 1699, codicil 19 Apr 1699 adding Joseph Smith, ironmonger of Bristol, as a fifth executor, proved at London 16 May 1699 on the oath of all five executors - Peter Temple, Edward Peirce, Morgan Smith, William Gough and Joseph Smith. DEATH IS NOW RECORDED AS A RANGE, bet 31 Mar and 16 May 1699: the tree's former 16 May 1699 was the PROBATE date, and the will's own date proves him alive on 31 Mar. Wife Hannah alive and PREGNANT at the will date, bequeathed 250 pounds, with the Corn Street, Bristol property entailed on the unborn male child - who is the posthumous Col. Joseph Temple [33], the Virginia founder. Living children at the will date were son William and daughter Mary ONLY. "My loving Brother Peter Temple of Bishopstrow in the County of Wilts, Gent" is named FIRST executor - the England-side sibling link in Joseph's own words. THE WILTSHIRE PROPERTY IS AT HEYTESBURY: the register reads "Haytsbury", and Hatchbury is the attested vernacular form of Heytesbury (Wilson, Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, 1870-72). This matters because [91] John Temple's 1635/6 will, in its 1910 printed abstract, leaves lands in "Hachbury" - very probably the SAME property descending in the family, and Heytesbury is where [2957] Thomas Temple d. 1594 lived. NOT proof of the descent, but it is the first property-level link between the Bishopstrow Temples and Heytesbury. The tenant of the Heytesbury messuage is still not legible at this scan resolution. ON HANNAH'S SURNAME: the will never states her maiden name. It names "my mother in law Mrs Mary Liston" and "my Uncle Robert Liston and Mary his wife" - two Listons in kin terms - and a second "mother in law Mrs Elizabeth Temple", which in 1699 usage means a step-mother, consistent with the tree's mother Marye Grund d. 1690. With Burke's and Lucy Temple Temple both naming her Liston, LISTON is strongly supported but NOT proven from this document; the citation is therefore attached to the person, not to the name. STILL OPEN, not acted on: the tree's William "b. 1686" predates the 1688 marriage and the stray 5 Mar 1691 Bristol date is likelier a christening; and "Infant Mary Temple (1690-1691)" contradicts a daughter Mary living in 1699. Memo: ancestry/temple-arnold-liston-junction.md ── ADDENDUM 31 Jul 2026 (later), from his FATHER's will (PROB 11/383/207, read from the register image): [89] William Temple's will of 1 May 1685 leaves Joseph 1,100 pounds payable at 21, ⭐ which proves Joseph was UNDER 21 on that date - born after 1 May 1664. The tree's 3 Feb 1666 satisfies this and is unchanged. ⭐⭐ It also devises to Joseph 'my free land and Coppyhold estate in HATCHBURY' - the same Heytesbury property Joseph still holds in his own 1699 will ('Haytsbury'), and the same one his grandfather [91] John Temple left in 1635/6 ('Hachbury'). THREE GENERATIONS ON THE SAME LAND. ⭐ And William's bequest to 'my Daughter Anne Pearse' very probably identifies Edward Peirce of the Devizes - the 'Brother in law' and executor of Joseph's 1699 will - as the husband of Joseph's SISTER (likely, not proven; the will does not name Anne's husband). Elizabeth, named as William's wife in 1685 with the remarriage formula 'as was hers before I married with her', is confirmed as Joseph's STEP-mother. CORRECTED 31 Jul 2026 same day: the legacy is ELEAVEN hundred pounds (1,100), not 700 - the under-21 inference is unaffected. And Burke's LG 1858 names the sister as marrying a PEARSE OF DEVIZES, which with William's 'my Daughter Anne Pearse' and Joseph's 'Brother in law Edward Peirce of the Devizes' makes Edward Peirce the husband of Joseph's sister Anne on three independent sources - no longer merely likely. ── 31 Jul 2026 (late): ProofFather and ProofMother set to 1 (PROVEN) on his ChildTable row in F58. His father [89] William Temple's will, PROB 11/383/207 (1 May 1685), names him directly - 'Item I give unto my sonne JOSEPH Eleaven hundred pounds... my free land and Coppyhold estate in Hatchbury' - and the same will names his brother Peter, whose flags were set in the same write. Both were undefined until now. PROOF CLASS: FATHER = DIRECT (13 Sep 2026, K681, Owen's grade; flag 1 unchanged). William Temple's will, PROB 11/383/207 of 1 May 1685, read on the original register image: 'Item I give unto my sonne Joseph ELEAVEN HUNDRED POUNDS'. PROOF CLASS: MOTHER = UNDERDETERMINED (13 Sep 2026, K681, Owen's grade; flag 1 unchanged). No record in hand names Marye Grund as his parent. Reopens on a Bristol or Wiltshire marriage for her, or on his own baptism. Detail below. RELABEL (K681) - [35] JOSEPH TEMPLE OF BRISTOL. FATHER = DIRECT. His father's will, PROB 11/383/207 dated 1 May 1685, ordered from TNA and read from the register image (cit 6936), names him: 'Item I give unto my sonne Joseph ELEAVEN HUNDRED POUNDS to bee paid him when hee shall accomplish the age of ONE AND TWENTY YEARES. Alsoe I give and bequeath unto him after my decease MY FREE LAND AND COPPYHOLD ESTATE IN HATCHBURY.' A record read by this project states the relationship. MOTHER = UNDERDETERMINED, and the note above already contains the reason. Nothing in hand names Marye Grund as his parent. The 1685 will gives the wife then living as Elizabeth with the standard remarriage formula, 'all such Plate and Goods AS WAS HERS BEFORE I MARRIED WITH HER'; his own 1699 will calls her 'mother in law', which in 1699 usage is a step-parent. Together those establish that the woman who bore him was someone else and was dead by 1685 - NOT that she was Marye Grund. The tree's recorded death of 1690 for Marye is separately contradicted by that same 1685 wife and is already queued as a flagged, unchanged conflict. REOPENS: a Bristol or Wiltshire marriage register entry for William Temple and Marye Grund, or a baptism for Joseph naming his parent. Note cit 59 ('England, Select Marriages') and cit 60 are attached to this man with ZERO transcription - LENGTH=0 measures transcription, not possession (K490), so open them before treating either as unheld.
