Research note · 30 Sep 2026
AUDITED 30 Sep 2026 - PARENTS ATTACHED, NOT YET GRADED: Isaac Franklin Pace and Mariah (Moriah Ann), her maiden name unknown.
His Texas death certificate, no. 82702 (Crandall, Kaufman Co., 23 Apr 1948), read on the image, names his father "Isaac Franklin Pace" and gives his mother's maiden name only as "Mariah", with the surname left blank; both parents' birthplaces are "not known". It gives his own birth as Aug 6th 1852 in Sabine County, Texas, and his occupation as retired Methodist minister.
The certificate does not say which Isaac Franklin Pace. The Sabine County censuses answer that; both were read on the image. In 1850 (dwelling 57) Isaac F. Pace, 37, farmer, born Alabama, lives with Moriah Ann, 28, born Louisiana, and five children born in Texas, among them Amandilla, 5, and Margaret Ann, 1. In 1860 (Housan Bayon Beat No. 3, dwelling 112) the same woman, now Mariah Jackson, 38, born Louisiana, heads a household holding Armadilla A. A. Pace, 15, M. A. Pace, 10, J. F. Pace, 7, and J. W. Jackson, 4. The boy of 7 is this man: same county, the age of a child born in 1852, and the mother and sisters of the 1850 household. A Jackson child of 4 means she had remarried by about 1855.
WEAKNESSES: the certificate was reported by an informant signing I. F. Pace, not by the man himself; the 1860 page is legible only at low resolution; and neither census states a relationship. A Find a Grave memorial, seen in the FamilySearch index only and not opened, gives Isaac Franklin Pace, 23 Sep 1812 - 15 Apr 1853, Spring Hill Cemetery, Hemphill. That would account for the remarriage and for the informant not knowing the father's birthplace, but it is unread.
CONFLICT: the 1900 census of this family (Justice Precinct 5, Shelby Co.) gives his father's birthplace as Mississippi and his mother's as Georgia; the 1850 census gives Alabama and Louisiana. Not resolved.
WALL: Sabine County's courthouse and all its records burned in November 1875, so the couple's marriage (about 1874) and any 1853 estate file for his father are gone.
