Research note · 3 Nov 2026
PROOF CLASS: FATHER = DIRECT (Owen, 3 Nov 2026) - John Carpenter's 1784 Lincoln County will gives land 'to my Daughter Margaret Carpenter' (K1614); the 1819 heirs' deed (K1608) shows she is the wife of Lindsey Powell.
PROOF CLASS: MOTHER = ARGUMENT (Owen, 3 Nov 2026) - an 1843 Casey County deed names her among 'the heirs at law & legal representatives of the said Elizabeth Morrison who was the widow of said John Carpenter' (K1615); a stepchild could not be an heir.
FATHER: JOHN CARPENTER of Carpenter's Station [3148], half brother of Conrad Carpenter. His will, dated 19 Nov 1784 and proved 15 Feb 1785 (Lincoln County Will Book A pp. 83-87; K1614, read on the image), says 'I also give and Bequeath to my Daughter Margaret Carpenter four hundred and thirty five Acres being a part of my Preemption' and divides money between 'my wife Elizabeth Carpenter and my Three Children Vizt, my two daughters Margaret & Mary Carpenter and my son George Carpenter'. It names 'my Brother George Carpenter' and 'my Brother Adam Carpenter' and appoints Elizabeth, Conrad and Adam executors. THE SAME MAN: an 1787 grant runs to 'Elizabeth Carpenter Executrix, Conrod Carpenter and Adam Carpenter Executors to the last Will & Testament of John Carpenter Deceased' (K1612), and a 1793 deed is made by 'Conrod Carpenter Executor and Ezra Morrison who Married Elizabeth Carpenter Executrix of John Carpenter Deceased' (K1611). THE SAME DAUGHTER: the 1819 deed of 'all legal heirs & Representatives of John Carpenter deceased' is made by exactly this family - Ezra Morrison and his wife Elizabeth, George Carpenter, James Patton and his wife Mary, and Lindsey Powell and his wife Margt Powell (K1608). In Feb 1832 Lindsey Powell signed for 'my Wifes Legacy' from Conrad Carpenter's estate (K1613), whose will gave a share to 'my half brother John Carpenter dec'd heirs' (K671). The will never calls Elizabeth the children's mother; that half is proved by the 1843 deeds (next paragraph).
MOTHER: ELIZABETH, wife of John Carpenter in 1784 and afterwards wife of Ezra Morrison (see her own note). A deed of 14 Jul 1843 (Casey County deed book p. 620; K1615, read on the image) is made by 'John Bright and Elizabeth his wife late Elizabeth Morrison, Lindsey Powell & Margaret his wife late Margaret Carpenter, Polly Patton' and the rest of Elizabeth Morrison's Morrison heirs, 'the parties of the first part being the heirs at law & legal representatives of the said Elizabeth Morrison who was the widow of said John Carpenter dec'd'. The land is 400 acres 'Pattented in the name of John Carpenter who devised the same to his wife Elizabeth Carpenter who afterwards intermarried with Ezra Morrison'. A Lincoln County deed of the same day, made by the Morrison line alone (K1616, read on the image), has the clerk's interlineation making them only 'a part of the heirs at law of said Elizabeth Morrison who is now dead'. THE ARGUMENT: Elizabeth left descendants (the Morrisons), so under Kentucky's law of descents her heirs were her children and their descendants, and a stepdaughter could not be one. Margaret, 'late Margaret Carpenter', is therefore Elizabeth's daughter. Consistent: in 1784 Elizabeth is John's wife and executrix, and the will provides for the 'Education' of 'my said Three Children', the son still under twenty-one (K1614). Her maiden name was Spears (see her note; K1620, K1619).
AUDITED 3 Nov 2026 - MARGARET CARPENTER, wife of Lindsey Powell; married in Lincoln County, Kentucky, 24 Feb 1798 (K1609, typed register read on the image; K772; the bond is not read). An heir of John Carpenter deceased: a Lincoln County deed of 29 May 1819 names 'Lindsey Powell and his wife Margt Powell of the County of Casey' among 'all legal heirs & Representatives of John Carpenter deceased', and she signs the facing deed as 'Peggy Powell' (K1608, read on the image). Still his wife in 1830 and 1843 (K1610, transcripts). Mother of [957] Sallie by argument; see Sallie's note. A compiled family account gives her birth as 7 Jul 1780 at Carpenter's Station, her death as 1 Jul 1846 in Casey County, and her mother as Elizabeth Spears; the dates are not sourced here (that her mother was Elizabeth is, above, and the surname Spears is proved in Elizabeth's note).
