PROOF CLASS: BOTH PARENTS = UNDERDETERMINED (Owen, 5 Sep 2026). The 1808 will names eleven children and not him - strong, still an absence, so flags stay 0/0. Reopens on the Archibald x Tabitha marriage bond, c.1809-1815. AUDITED 3 Sep 2026 - [1256] EDWARD BASS FOWLKES: HIS FATHER IS CONTRADICTED, NOT MERELY UNSOURCED. His putative father's own will names ELEVEN children and he is NOT ONE OF THEM. The F443 link is LEFT IN PLACE and the proof flag LEFT AT 0/0 (never assessed) - this note records the contradiction, it does not resolve it. THE DOCUMENT: the will of Henry Foulkes Sen.r, Nottoway County, Virginia, Will Book 2 pages 441-444, written 27 Apr 1808 and proved 1 Sep 1808. FamilySearch arks 3:1:3QS7-99PX-6469 (pp.441-442) and 3:1:3QS7-99PX-64D9 (pp.443-444). READ END TO END BY EYE ON THE MANUSCRIPT, all four pages, in overlapping bands - salutation, all eleven bequest clauses, residuary provisions, executor clause, witnesses and probate. Register K415. star THE NEGATIVE IS IMAGE-GROUNDED, NOT OCR-GROUNDED, AND THAT DISTINCTION IS THE WHOLE POINT. An earlier reading (K408) found no Edward in the OCR text, but the SAME OCR renders the testator's own opening 'I Henry Foulkes Sen.r' as 'I Henry Lou thes Senr' - so a mangled Edward and an absent Edward return the identical zero, and that negative was expressly ungradeable. Reading the image removes the objection: there is no Edward, in any clause, in any spelling. THE ARITHMETIC, which is what lifts this above an argument from silence. The will names eleven children; RM family F443 also holds eleven; TEN match by name. The will's eleventh is NANCY FOULKES, who was not in this tree until today. The tree's eleventh is Edward B., who is not in the will. It is a ONE-FOR-ONE SUBSTITUTION, not an omission. THE HONEST COUNTER, not excluded: a will CAN omit a living child - advancement, estrangement, predecease. But this testator is meticulous. He names Branch solely in order to leave him 'a saddle and Bridle which he has received & nothing else'; he provides for any child who loses a slave before majority; he gives $100 to each son except Theodorick. A testator this careful does not silently omit a son. That is an argument, not a proof, and it is why the flag stays at 0/0. CORROBORATION FROM THE OTHER PARENT: Tabitha Fowlkes's own will (Nottoway, 30 June, proved Aug 1825, ark 3:1:3QS7-99PX-XQZG, register K412) also omits Edward B. Different year, different scribe, different film page, different OCR pass. no-entry WEAK ON ITS OWN - it is a chattels will naming only four children plus a granddaughter per stirpes, and Martha, John B., Elisha, Charles H., Branch and Nancy are all absent from it too. Corroborative, never decisive. no-entry NO EVIDENCE HAS EVER BEEN PRODUCED **FOR** THE [1258]->[1256] LINK. It has been proof 0/0 since it entered the tree. WHY NOT SIMPLY DETACH HIM (Owen's decision, 3 Sep 2026): because TreeShare does NOT propagate a relationship detach, so it would be browser work; and because the POSITIVE question - whose son WAS he? - has no answer, so a detach would leave him floating with nothing gained. star THE LEAD THAT MAY YET EXPLAIN HIM: Henry's daughter is 'Tabitha H Foulkes', and the widow of Archibald Fowlkes of Charlotte County is 'Tabitha H Fowlkes' (K414, five occurrences). If Archibald married Henry's daughter, then 'my brother Edward B Foulks' in Archibald's 1817 will is a BROTHER-IN-LAW - ordinary period usage - and the three-way Charlotte puzzle dissolves. no-entry SUGGESTIVE ONLY: Tabitha is endemic in this family, and Archibald's own will says Tabitha A while the suit papers say H. It would NOT restore this link either way. NAMED NEXT DOCUMENT: a Nottoway or Charlotte marriage bond for ARCHIBALD FOWLKES x TABITHA (H.) FOWLKES, c.1809-1815. AUDITED 13 Sep 2026 - HIS PARENTS' MARRIAGE IS NOW DATED FROM A RECORD IN HAND, AND THE PARENTAGE ITSELF IS STILL NOT STATED. (K686) cit 5187 (on [1258]) and cit 5188 (on [1259]) point at the same printed page and both read ActualText LENGTH=0 (K490/K668). Now transcribed on both. Printed p. 37, last entry on the page: "March 2, 1782, Fowlkes, Henry, & Tabitha Bass." ⛔ NO parent is named for bride or groom, and the entry says nothing about any child. CONTROL, on the SAME page: this series DOES print parentage when the bond carried it - the entry immediately above is "Nov. 23, 1780, Fowlkes, Jas., (son of Jno.), & Sally Foster. (d. of Mary).", and the page also gives "(sister of Daniel Jones)", "(d. of Sarah Lockett)", "(d. of William)" and two standalone consent-giver names. Its silence on Henry and Tabitha is the abstracter reporting a bond that named none. ★ WHAT IT DOES GIVE, AND IT IS A LEG AND NOT A PROOF: a DATED marriage of Henry Fowlkes and Tabitha Bass, 2 Mar 1782, against which this man is recorded born 7 Mar 1785 (E3801) - three years and five days later - and carries his recorded mother's maiden surname BASS as his own middle name. Those are two elements of a maternity argument. No proof summary has been written and Owen has graded nothing, so the class stays UNDERDETERMINED and both flags stay 0. ⛔ AND THE SERIES IS A PRINTED ABSTRACT, NOT THE BOND. An upgrade runs through the original Virginia county marriage bond or register. The entry names no county; the surrounding entries are Prince Edward and neighbouring-county Foster and Fowlkes families, so the county is an open question and must not be asserted from this page. AUDITED 18 Sep 2026 - THE MATERNITY LEG RECORDED IN THE BLOCK ABOVE IS NOT INDEPENDENT OF THE CLAIM IT WOULD TEST, AND THE 13 Sep ENTRY DOES NOT SAY SO. MEASURED read-only against this database on 18 Sep 2026, with controls run in both directions. The Birth event E3801, which is the only place the date 7 Mar 1785 comes from, carries ZERO citations. The primary name record N1306 'Edward Bass Fowlkes', which is the only place the middle name BASS comes from, carries ZERO citations. His Death event E3803 (5 Oct 1853) carries ZERO citations as well. THE QUERY FIRES: on this same man the Burial E3802 and all four Residence events E3804, E3805, E3806 and E3807 each return one citation, and this database holds 1,843 name-level and 4,571 event-level citation links in total, so a zero here is an absence in the record rather than a broken instrument. WHY IT MATTERS: both halves of the leg - the birth date and the middle name - are inherited tree data descending from the same unsourced tradition that placed this man under Henry Fowlkes and Tabitha Bass to begin with, which is the tradition the 3 Sep block above exists to contradict. Evidence that descends from the claim it is meant to test cannot test it. This does not show the leg is wrong; it shows the leg is not independent, and a later session weighing the case must not count E3801's date or N1306's middle name as corroboration of the parentage. No class changes here and no flag moves here; the grading recorded at the head of this note stands untouched. THE UPGRADE THIS NAMES is a source for the BIRTH DATE that does not descend from the Henry tradition - a Bible record or a page image of one, or a census age. It is NOT another reading of the printed marriage abstract, which is the other half of the same leg.
