1860 U.S. Federal Census — Schedule 1, Free Inhabitants in District No. 13, County of Franklin, State of Tennessee, enumerated 18 July 1860; Post Office Winchester; page 179. Roll M653_1249, image 365; FHL film 805249. Ancestry collection 7667, image 4296189_00365. READ FROM THE IMAGE 31 Jul 2026. DWELLING 1763 / FAMILY 1734 — the surname is written once and carried down by ditto marks: Malissa Catchings 38 F [no occupation] personal estate $370, NO real estate James H " 18 M Farmhand Nancy J " 17 F John " 15 M Farmhand Andrew " 13 M Geo W " 11 M Meredith " 9 M Mary E " 7 F B F " 5 M Next household, dwelling 1764 / family 1735: George West, 47, M, Farmer, real $2150 / personal $635. ⛔ NO ADULT MALE IS PRESENT. Malissa, 38, heads the household. This is consistent with her husband [296] Benjamin Franklin Catchings Sr having died 1858-1860 — and it is precisely why this record is NOT evidence about him. It does not name him. ⚠️ THE 1860 CENSUS HAS NO RELATIONSHIP-TO-HEAD COLUMN. That these eight are her children is an inference from household order, ditto-marked surname and ages — a strong one, but an inference. The record states co-residence, not parentage. ⚠️⚠️ ANCESTRY'S INDEX IS WRONG ABOUT HER: its record panel gives 'INFERRED SPOUSE: James H Catchings' — who is her EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD SON, merely the eldest male in the household. DO NOT ACCEPT THAT HINT; it would marry a mother to her son. The index also reads 'Nancy I' where the page reads 'Nancy J'. ⭐ Ages give: Malissa b. ~1822 (tree has 'abt 1825' — not changed on a census age); James H ~1842, Nancy J ~1843, John ~1845, Andrew ~1847, Geo W ~1849, Meredith ~1851, Mary E ~1853, B F ~1855 (= [246] Benjamin Franklin Catchings Jr). ⭐ NOTE FOR THE CATCHINGS-WEST QUESTION: a WEST household (George West, farmer) is the very next dwelling. The two surnames marry 89 years later ([122] Chloye Ann West x [47] Eugene Lloyd Catchings, 1949). Neighbours in 1860 Franklin Co. — suggestive, proves nothing alone.

Research notes

Working notes from the research, kept verbatim — what was read, what it proved, what stays open.

Research note · 25 Jul 2026
Audited 25 Jul 2026 - Junction #4: birth corrected to 26 Feb 1856 (FG); the 1867 of the cousin voter registration detached; census chain 1860-1920 consistent. See ancestry/catchings-branch-research.md.
Research note · 27 Jul 2026
Audited 27 Jul 2026. FATHER EVIDENCED; MOTHER DISPUTED. Death certificate, Refugio Co., 28 Jan 1924, B.O.V.S. 2971, image 33154_B061910-01681 (Texas, U.S., Death Certificates, 1903-1982 (Ancestry coll. 2272)), informant his son J. T. Catchings: field 10 FATHER = 'Benjaman Catching[s]' (b. Tennessee); field 9 his own birthplace 'MIDDLE TENN.'; field 13 mother's birthplace 'Tenn.'. *** FIELD 12, MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME, READS 'NEAL' - NOT the Malissa Ann Rose this tree carries. *** The tree's own timeline already strains that attribution (a 1884 marriage of B.F. Sr x Malissa was deleted as junk, and B.F. Sr died 1858-60, so a wife married in 1884 cannot be the mother of a son born 1856). Possible first wife with later children mis-attributed - the Junction 5 and 8 pattern. RESEARCH, do not edit: 1860 census, Middle Tennessee, Catchings household. Also note the birth date is internally inconsistent on the certificate itself.--- SUPERSEDED 27 Jul 2026: the MOTHER DISPUTED finding above was resolved in favour of Malissa Ann Rose [297] and ProofMother set to Proven. See the Phase 3 Audited note on this person for the full reasoning. ---
Research note · 27 Jul 2026
Audited 27 Jul 2026 - post-1850 spine, Phase 3 (ancestry/post-1850-plan.md). Parents were already attached here; this note records the record that EVIDENCES them, and ProofFather/ProofMother have been set to Proven.*** RESOLVES THE TREE'S ONLY EXPLICIT PARENTAGE CONTRADICTION. *** ProofMother was set to 3 (DISPUTED) on 27 Jul 2026 because his 1924 Refugio Co. death certificate gives his mother's maiden name as 'Neal', not Rose. Resolved the same day to PROVEN in favour of Malissa Ann Rose [297].THE DECIDING RECORD WAS ALREADY ATTACHED AND ALREADY READ: 1860 U.S. Census, DISTRICT 13, FRANKLIN CO., TENNESSEE, dwelling 1763 (NARA M653_1249 p.179; cited on this person three times - citations 2330, 2338, 2346). It enumerates 'B F', age 5, in the household headed by MALISSA CATCHINGS, 38, together with seven siblings who map one-to-one onto the recorded children of family F181, every age within one year. That is the identical standard used for every other ProofMother=1 link in this tree.WHY THE CERTIFICATE DOES NOT OUTWEIGH IT: the informant was a GRANDSON, reporting 27 years after Malissa's death and 52 years after she had remarried and become a Crownover - so 'Neal' is a third-hand recollection of a woman he is unlikely to have known under the Rose name. The same certificate contradicts itself by nine months on the birth date. Its field 13 ('mother born Tennessee') AGREES with Malissa. Against that stand ten independent supports including the sourced 1844 marriage, the intact 1850 couple, and his own Find A Grave biography naming 'Ethel Mellissia Rose'.'NEAL' IS NOT DISCARDED - IT IS REFILED. If the surname is real it belongs to the PRE-1844 children [322] and [299], who cannot be Malissa's, and is a live lead there.CHEAPEST TEST IF THIS IS EVER REOPENED: T. J. Catchings' 1919 Polk Co. death certificate - different informant, different decade.SEPARATE FINDING, NOT ACTED ON HERE: [297] Malissa carries ZERO citations across all three OwnerTypes (verified untruncated). Attaching this same 1860 census to [296] and [297] would evidence both parents at once and costs one TreeShare action.** EVIDENCE BASIS: the 1860 census records NO relationship column. This grading rests on household composition, ages and dwelling number, weighed against a contradicting death certificate. Basis stated so it is never overstated. **
