Register of Peaked Mountain Church, Rockingham (then Augusta) Co., Virginia, trans. Hinke and Kemper - printed in William and Mary College Quarterly, vols. XIII and XIV
William and Mary College Quarterly vol. XIII, p. 252, baptismal records, entry 45
read the transcript
Verbatim, with the two neighbouring entries included because they are what establish the meaning of the parenthetical number: "John Hetterich (Hedrick), Reformed (44), elder and wife Susanna, nee Hornung. GEORGE ZIMMERMANN, REFORMED ELDER (45), AND WIFE ANNA, NEE, SCHULTELI. Jacob Mueller (46), and wife Maria Barbara, nee Chrombohr. Frederick Stoll (Stull), and wife Charlotte, nee Ritter, (47) ..." READ THE NUMBERS CORRECTLY: 44, 45, 46 and 47 run consecutively across four SUCCESSIVE FAMILIES. They are the editor's list-item numbers, NOT ages. A first reading of this source took (45) for George's age and inferred a birth about 1717; that inference is WITHDRAWN and no birth year is entered from this document. WHAT THE ENTRY DOES ESTABLISH: the couple are named together in a contemporaneous congregation list; he is an ELDER; and the confession is REFORMED. The last of these matters - Schaffhausen is a Reformed canton, whereas the Salzburg emigrants of 1731-32 were LUTHERAN expellees bound for Georgia. So this single word contradicts the 'Salzburg' birthplace string the tree carries for [3315], George's father. --- CORRECTED AND EXTENDED 13 Sep 2026 (K673), FROM THE PAGE IMAGE. ⛔ THE 2 Aug 2026 READ WAS FROM THE OCR TEXT LAYER AND MISDESCRIBED THE RECORD: this is NOT a membership list. It is the register's BAPTISMAL RECORDS table - three columns, PARENTS | CHILDREN | SPONSORS - and the archive.org text layer serialises the three columns into one run, which is why only the parents column was seen and the child was invisible. Read on the image (vol. XIII p. 252, entry 45), the full row is: PARENTS 'George Zimmermann, Reformed elder (45), and wife Anna, nee, Schulteli.' | CHILDREN 'Barbara, bapt. August 29.' | SPONSORS 'Parents.' The year is fixed by entry (40) on the same page, 'Anna Catharine; bapt. April 25 (1762).' So entry 45 records the BAPTISM OF A DAUGHTER, Barbara, on 29 August 1762. The numbering finding above stands unchanged: 44, 45, 46 and 47 are consecutive families, not ages. The table head PARENTS / CHILDREN / SPONSORS was anchored on vol. XIII p. 249, where the baptismal list opens with entries (1)-(4). Image: ancestry/sources/peaked-mountain-register-2026-09-13/WMQ13-leaf0515.jpg
