Georgine Montgomery Derrick

AUDITED 27 Aug 2026 - BOTH PARENTS PROVEN ON THE 1852 WILL OF [507] WILLIAM SHARPLESS DERRICK. Georgine Montgomery Derrick is named directly by the father as one of "my children, Lucretia Hart Derrick, Anna Louisa Derrick, Henry Clay Derrick, Josephine Derrick, Estelle Derrick, Clarence Derrick and Georgine Montgomery Derrick," in his last will and testament, signed 14 May 1852 (one day before his death, 15 May 1852) and probated 25 May 1852, Orphans' Court, Washington County, D.C. ("Derrick, William S. - 1852 - Box 21", D.C. Archives Record Group 2; Provine, Index to D.C. Wills 1801-1920, p. 51). * THE SAME INSTRUMENT NAMES THE MOTHER. It names his wife "Ann Patterson Derrick" ([508] Anna Patterson Lyons) and gives her "the custody, tuition, and guardianship of the persons of each of my children ... during their respective minorities" - proving her as mother of the group named alongside her, not merely as his widow (a printed 1858 Senate report calling her "Mrs. Ann P. Derrick" had proved only a wife). * WHY THIS IS STRONGER THAN COPE. Cope's Genealogy of the Sharpless Family (1887), page 766, entry 2428, lists these same seven children under [507] but does not cite its source for this family. This will is a first-person, contemporaneous, legally-executed document naming the same seven, in the same order, 35 years earlier. * CROSS-CHECKED IN THIS DATABASE: F253 carries these same seven names in this same ChildOrder; [507]'s death event is dated 15 May 1852, one day after the will's own date, which is itself corroborated by the will. * WHAT IT DOES NOT DO: it does not independently document [508] Anna Patterson Lyons's OWN parents - her birth family stays Cope-only for that. * A NEW LEAD IT OPENS, NOT YET ACTED ON: the will names the testator's brother, Alexander H. Derrick, as Executor - a previously unknown sibling of [507], presumably another child of [515] Philip Derrick x [516] Sarah Sharpless (F255).
