1930 The Houston papers' lists of "intentions to marry" for 15 June 1930 named the couple as "Hugh O. Carpenter and Miss Dolores Grace Carpenter," giving the groom his bride's surname. The Chronicle and the Post printed the same slip, and the two were married three days later.

1937 Over the Christmas week-end of 1937 he and his wife came from Beaumont to his parents' home in Houston, where his brothers Rudolph, of Tomball, and Walter, of Conroe, were guests with their wives. It was his father's last Christmas: George Washington West died at home on 27 January 1938.

1945 He was plant engineer at the H. M. Harrell re-cycling plant at Bammel, and on 24 May 1945 he was overcome while cleaning a boiler there; his superintendent, "thinking he had been in too long," called him out. He was taken to Bammel for a doctor, and when none could be found he was taken home to Westfield, where he died before the ambulance arrived.

1945 He was a Freemason, a member of Unity Lodge No. 267, A.F. and A.M., at Houma, Louisiana. When he died in 1945, Humble Lodge No. 979 took charge of his burial at Brookside.
