Research note · 16 Aug 2026
AUDITED 16 Aug 2026 - FATHER PROVEN ON A TESTAMENTARY RECORD: the will of Fry Carpenter (8 Jan 1866), the children's uncle, disposes 'six and one half shares to my brother George F. Carpenter's children', calls George F. 'their father', and places 'L. P. Carpenter' in the sequence ('To L. P. Carpenter I give not any thing'). FATHER ONLY - the will names Sally as George F.'s wife, never as the children's mother; ProofMother stays 0.THE RECORD - loose original in [Original Wills]: Smith, Tennessee. Wills 1803-1870 (FamilySearch DGS 004776122, images 2847-2860; enumeration img 2847 ark 3:1:S7WF-SKYF-89; the L. P./'their father' page img 2848 ark 3:1:S7WF-SKYJ-H9; Jan 1868 codicil img 2860 ark 3:1:3QSQ-2YZ2-C9), read on the images 16 Aug 2026; recorded copy with probate certificate in Smith Co. County Court Minutes 1865-1869 p. 434 (ark 3:1:3Q9M-CSRV-L97Y-3): proved Monroe County Court, Kentucky, November Special Term 1868, certificate 9 Nov 1868, witnesses Abraham Jinkins and Christopher Hays.WHY RECORD-CLASS - (1) the share arithmetic (1.5 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 0.5x4 = 6.5) binds the eight named takers to 'my brother George F. Carpenter's children', and the L. P. sentence sits inside that sequence; (2) the Jan 1868 codicil excludes 'Lindsey Carpenter' from the heirs-of-George-F. share - an exclusion only necessary for a member of that class; (3) the roster maps nine-for-nine onto F378's children living Jan 1866 (Elizabeth [1064], George Franklin Jr [960], William Henry [1061], Mary [1068], Lucinda = Lucy [1063] (name variant, flagged), Edmund [958], James [1067], David Fry [1069], plus L. P. = [211]), and the four children dead before 1866 are absent; (4) the 1850 Smith Co. census household on this person's existing citation ('Linzy 24' under George T./F. Carpenter, p. 336a dwelling 393) supplies co-residence.GRADE AND LIMITS - (1) The mother is never stated; [957] Sarah Sallie Powell remains unevidenced as his mother (her marriage to George F. is separately documented in the 24 Aug 1867 Sweeney-certificate deed, Texas GLO Fannin 1st Class file 1338, which also names HER parents Lindsey Powell and Margaret, late of Casey Co., Ky.; that 1867 deed is onomastic corroboration for the mother link, not proof). (2) Variant readings unresolved: dateline county Ma[c/r]ion, Tenn.; Lucinda's married name Mins (loose will) vs Moore (minutes); sister Margaret's husband Campbell vs Carpenter. (3) Will pages 2849-57 largely unread. (4) [1008] Christina, alive 1866, is absent from Fry's sibling bequests - unexplained, flagged. (5) [1010] Fry's recorded death place 'Grundy, Tennessee' (0 citations) sits against the Monroe Co., Ky. probate - reconcile research-first.
