Research note · 27 Jul 2026
Audited 27 Jul 2026. PARENTAGE EVIDENCED TWICE. (1) Death certificate, Travis Co., 19 Feb 1948, file 9755, image 40394_b062322-03435 (Texas, U.S., Death Certificates, 1903-1982 (Ancestry coll. 2272)): field 10 FATHER = 'Lindsey Carpenter'; field 12 MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME = 'Margaret' with the surname left as a dash; birthplace 'Knobnoster, Missouri'. Informant was the Texas Confederate Home for Men, an institution, so both parents' birthplaces read 'Unknown'. (2) 1880 U.S. Census, Lamonte, Pettis Co., Missouri, ED 116 p. 77A, image 4242029-00412: enumerated 'Carpenter ... Major, W M 10, STEP SON' in the household of John H. Divers, with his mother Margaret as Divers's wife and his sister Fannie Carpenter, 12, beside him. Step-son OF DIVERS - his mother's second husband - which corroborates rather than contradicts Carpenter paternity, since Lindsey Powell Carpenter died in 1875. CAUTION: the surname 'Carter' for his mother is NOT corroborated by either record.
