1906 After years on the railroad, transferred 23 times by his daughter's count and posted about a year in Mexico, he quit in 1906: he bought eight cows, a horse named Bones, a worn-out racehorse and a two-wheel gig, and shipped them to Humble in a box car with the furniture. On Washington's Birthday he pitched a tent on lots at C and Main, dug a well and set out two live oak trees.

1908 From 1908 Major Lindsey Carpenter ran the Carpenter Dairy and Truck Farm, eleven acres with a Jersey herd, barn and silo, selling at the Houston City Market. He shipped the first carload of sweet potatoes out of Harris County, to Ennis.

1915 In the autumn of 1915 he sold the dairy and opened a dry goods store, buying the E. W. Corley house at C and Main next to the Dixie Theater and having it moved with a horse, a mule and logs.

1948 He died in Austin on 19 February 1948, aged 77. The informant on his death certificate was not a relative but the Texas Confederate Home for Men, an institution, which gave both his parents' birthplaces as unknown; he was born in 1870.

A neighbor's son recalled that every Christmas he brought home a box of fireworks for all the children in the neighborhood, and that the children believed he cut holes in his pockets so coins would fall out for them to find.
