While her husband was posted in Mexico she took her two small children to a bull fight. Her son fainted and she nearly did, standing in tears with one child by the hand and the other in her arms.

She bore nine children, six daughters and three sons, and taught the older ones at home before Humble had a proper school, so that they knew the primer and first reader by memory when they enrolled. All nine finished school in Humble.
