1924 When his parents divorced in 1924 he was ten. His father was the one chosen to make the announcement to him, and he remembered how wretched he was.

He and his sister went through the old family house at Wayland in Essex County, Virginia, found a cache of family letters, and he stuffed a pillowcase with as many as it would hold, feeling, he said, a little bit scavenging. Those are the Wayland letters.
